Zhouzhi Mount of the Cross Sanctuary (China)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Shrine of the Mount of the Cross of Zhouzhi -Mount of the Cross of Zhou Zhi in the Italian relationship of Fides Agency - it is located in Zhouzhi, in the Chinese province of Shaanxi. The ecclesial source includes it among Chinese Marian shrines, but it does not offer a postal address or the exact position of the enclosure. That is why the marker is placed in the town of Zhouzhi, not in a building that could not be identified. The coordinate comes from OpenStreetMap, which places the town at 34.1632, 108.2041; its accuracy is locality.

Documented history

Agenzia Fides published a dossier on the Marian shrines of China in 2006. In the index of the second part it expressly mentions the Shrine of the Mount of the Cross of Zhou Zhi, within Shaanxi, along with other Marian pilgrimage places of the country. This mention documents that the place was recognized as Marian sanctuary in the ecclesial information consulted. The source does not provide a date of foundation, the name of its founder, the history of its construction and a statistics of pilgrims.

This caution is important because another news from Fides, also from 2006, speaks of a "small shrine of the Mountain of the Cross" located in the diocese of Weinan, in Shaanxi, and says that it received more than ten thousand pilgrims a year. That news doesn't identify the place with Zhouzhi. This figure is therefore not attributed to this sanctuary and there is no date or history here that sources do not unequivocally relate to Zhouzhi.

Tradition and devotion

The name of the sanctuary links three references: the mountain, the cross of Christ and the invocation of Mary. The relationship of Fides places it in the context of the sanctuaries to which the Chinese Catholic communities come during the month of May and at other times of pilgrimage. The fact sheet retains this data as a framework of documented devotion, without making it a story of apparition.

Marian veneration leads to Christ. Mary is asked for her intercession and honored as the Mother of the Lord; worship corresponds only to God. There is no sufficiently documented local tradition to add witness names, specific dates, cures or promises linked to the mountain.

Legend

There is no Marian apparition, a miracle or a verified foundational legend for the Mount of the Cross of Zhouzhi. The fact that Fides includes him among Marian shrines documents his existence as a place of worship and pilgrimage, but does not amount to a judgment of a supernatural phenomenon.

Ecclesial State

The place is recorded as permitted veneration in the limited sense of a Marian sanctuary included in a relationship of places of worship and Catholic pilgrimage. The sources consulted do not contain a specific decree approving an apparition, a private revelation or a miracle. The absence of this decree does not erase the existence of the sanctuary or allow its history to be filled with undocumented statements.

Anecdotes and stories

The main historical accuracy of this fact sheet is also its limit: the accessible documentation allows to identify the sanctuary, its name and its province, but it does not allow to safely rebuild the daily life of the place. The number of pilgrims of the news about Weinan is out because it could lead to confusion between two different mountains of the cross. Keeping both references separate protects the accuracy of the map and respects the history of each community.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus and companion of the pilgrims, pray for the Christian community of Zhouzhi. Teach us to contemplate the cross of your Son with faith, to serve with humility and to ask God for the grace we need. It accompanies those who go up to the sanctuaries of the mountains and always leads their steps to Christ. Amen.

Documentary extension: what the dossier can say

Zhou Zhi's mention appears in an Agenzia Fides dossier dedicated to the Marian shrines of China. It is an ecclesial identification of the place within a relationship of sanctuaries, but not a complete historical fact sheet: the dossier does not provide a date of foundation, founder, postal address or specific statistics of pilgrims. That is why this extension keeps the data of Zhouzhi and the news of Fides that places another Mount of the Cross in the diocese of Weinan separate.

Zhouzhi's administrative relationship in OpenStreetMap only solves the location of the population. He doesn't identify the shrine building. The marker continues, therefore, with precision locality; the mapping is not presented as a coordinate of the enclosure. This difference protects the record from false accuracy and makes clear which part comes from an ecclesial source and which part is an auxiliary geographical reference.
