Our Lady of Ay

Where is he?

Notre-Dame d'Ay is located in Saint-Romain-d'Ay, in the department of Ardèche, region of Auvernia-Rhódano-Alpes, France. The point of the map corresponds to the cult building identified in OpenStreetMap as Église Notre-Dame d'Ay. The sanctuary is integrated into a historical set of the chapel, the old castle and the roads that descend to the river.

Documented history

The historic page of the sanctuary presents the place as a pre-Christianization enclave, located next to ancient Roman ways. The same source claims that there was a pagan cult of Isis there. As this statement comes from the divulgative history of the sanctuary itself and not from a detailed archaeological check incorporated in the tab, it is preserved here with caution: it is part of the historical account of the place, but it is not presented as an archaeological fact shown in all its details.

The Christian tradition of the site goes back, according to the same source, to a chapel dedicated to the Virgin from the first centuries of Christianity. By the end of the 12th century a Black Virgin was already venerated and pilgrims came. In the 16th century the parishes of the Annonay plateau carried out processions to ask for the end of epidemics and natural calamities. These processions document a practice of piety and supplication; they do not themselves prove a concrete miracle.

There are precise historical references to the relationship of the place with ecclesiastical institutions. In 776, the possession of the chapel was attributed to the Benedictine of Saint- Claude. In 1184, Federico Barbaroja confirmed that donation to the bishopric of Vienne. The current image is a copy of an earlier image lost during the wars of Religion and is dated in the final part of the 16th century.

During the French Revolution in 1793, Farigoule bought the chapel and inhabited it, avoiding its destruction. In the early 19th century, the owner Mme de la Rochette expanded and embellished the whole: she raised the walls, built the vault, the choir and the bell tower and gave the building its current appearance. Mgr Bonnel, Bishop of Viviers, opened the works in 1836 and in that period the place was given to the bishopric. The Jesuits remained linked to the sanctuary until 1954.

Tradition

Devotion is concentrated in a black Virgin. The very history of the sanctuary poses as a possibility that Odon de Tournon or the Lord of Ay would have carried an image from the Holy Land as he left for the third crusade, but presents it as a question, not as a certainty. The memory of processions of the nearby parishes, which were in the face of epidemics and collective dangers, is also preserved.

Legend

The alleged origin related to Isis, the direct continuity between an ancient altar and Christian veneration and the possible transfer of the image from the Holy Land belong to layers other than the local account. They can be studied as tradition, hypothesis or memory, but they should not be confused with a statement of the Church about an apparition. Nor does a specific supernatural fact approved be recorded in the cross-cutting sources.

Ecclesial State

It consists of the existence of a chapel and a Marian Catholic sanctuary, the historical link with the bishopric and the authorization of public devotion. In 1890, with the authorization of Leo XIII, the Virgin was proclaimed "Queen of the Upper Vivarais," a devotional title that confirms the importance of veneration. There is no decree declaring a supernatural apparition in Ay or approving as miraculous all the accounts of the place. The fact sheet therefore distinguishes the permitted cult from the foundational legends.

Anecdotes and stories

The chapel survived the Revolution thanks to the purchase and residence of Farigoule. The set also retains remains of different historical stages: the sanctuary, the castle, a menhir integrated into a wall and Roman vestiges described by the history of the place. The castle was transformed by the family of Tournon between the 15th and 16th centuries and forms a unique religious and heritage landscape with the chapel.

The current visit combines prayer, heritage and nature. The sanctuary organizes visits of about two hours and maintains forest paths to the river. The image of the Virgin is not understood here as being separated from the community that for centuries came to ask for help and to give thanks; but the Christian veneration is addressed to God and Mary is asked to intercession.

Prayer

Virgin Holy of Ay, Mother of Jesus, accompanies families and peoples who seek comfort in the midst of disease, uncertainty or difficulties. Intercede before your Son to grant us a humble faith, a persevering charity and the wisdom to care for the weakest. May this sanctuary lead us to Christ and to Christian hope. Amen.
