Our Lady of Grace of Ipswich (England)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The advocation of Our Lady of Grace of Ipswich was born around a medieval sanctuary located in Lady Lane, Ipswich (Suffolk, England). The modern restoration was linked to the church of St Mary at the Elms, the temple closest to the historical site, and in recent years the Catholic diocese of East Anglia has also documented a new stage of devotion in St Pancras. The point of the map is located at 52.0571, 1.1501, verified coordinate of the St Mary at the Elms building taken from Wikidata Q7401867. It does not appear as the exact coordinate of the missing medieval chapel.

The history of Ipswich requires to preserve two related places without confusing them: Lady Lane recalls the original site of the sanctuary, while St Mary at the Elms represents the nearest ecumenical and devotional restoration. The fact sheet uses the name of the historical sanctuary and explains the transfer of devotion rather than inventing an architectural continuity that no longer consists.

Documented history

The Catholic diocese of East Anglia documents a first mention of the sanctuary in 1152. In the Middle Ages, Our Lady of Ipswich was an important destination for pilgrimage. The diocesan source recalls that Elizabeth, daughter of Edward I, married in the chapel in 1297 and that, between 1517 and 1522, the place received visits from Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, Tomas Moro and Cardinal Wolsey, born in Ipswich. These references belong to the documented history of the sanctuary, not to an affirmation of miracles.

The sanctuary was destroyed during the Reformation. The diocesan information of 2022 states that the statue was removed in 1538 and sent to London to be burned. The later tradition holds that the image would have reached Nettuno, south of Rome, where an image known as the "English Lady" is preserved. The same source presents this link as a legend: there is a persistent tradition, but it is not offered here as a proven identification.

The diocesan documentation also retains a social memory of the pilgrimage. It is said that the sanctuary was almost as important as Walsingham and that the pilgrims came to the Virgin to ask for her intercession in the face of very diverse needs. This description explains the extent of medieval devotion, but does not turn every request or healing narrated into a miracle recognized by the Church.

Restoration and tradition

In 1977, Anglicans and Catholics from Ipswich gathered to talk about the restoration of the sanctuary. The Guild of Our Lady of Grace was born from this process. The restoration sought to regain the memory of the pilgrimage and work for the unity of Christians. St Mary at the Elms became a place of prayer and reception of the restored image, near the original Lady Lane site.

In 2022 the diocese reported the twentieth anniversary of the restoration of the sanctuary. The celebration included a thanksgiving, the presence of representatives of different Christian communities and a prayer before the statue. In 2024, the diocese reported that Bishop Peter Collins blessed a statue of Our Lady of Ipswich and Our Lady of Grace and that devotion began to form part of the life of the diocese. These facts describe a contemporary devotional restoration and ecumenical dialogue; they do not prove the material authenticity of Nettuno's medieval image.

Legend and limits of the record

The identification between the English statue destroyed in the Reformation and the image of Nettuno is the main legendary tradition of the sanctuary. The diocesan sources explain that the image would have been moved and that some consider that continuity likely, but there is no conclusive test in the sources used to present it as a safe fact. This is why the fact sheet distinguishes between the documented medieval statue, the legend of its survival and the modern replicas that support current devotion.

The research used for this lot does not provide a decree of Marian apparition or an individual canonical process that declares miraculous the healing associated with the sanctuary. When sources mention that pilgrims asked for healing, help or resolution of conflicts, the data is kept as a history of devotion. It does not become a supernatural approval.

Ecclesial State

The marker uses permitted veneration to describe the contemporary stage documented by the diocese: the bishop blessed the statue, devotion is integrated into diocesan life and there are pilgrimages and prayer. This category refers to veneration and pastoral activity; it does not mean that the Church has declared the image of Nettuno authentic, approved an apparition or individually recognized a miracle.

The restored sanctuary has an ecumenical dimension, with Anglican and Catholic participation. The Church of England and the Catholic diocese of East Anglia must be mentioned as different realities. In any case, Marian prayer is intercession: Mary is venerated as the Mother of Jesus and is asked to lead to God, to whom worship corresponds.

Anecdotes and stories

The 1297 celebration of Elizabeth's marriage in the chapel connects the history of the sanctuary to the political and family history of England. It is also significant that the modern pilgrimage goes the way from areas of Ipswich to Lady Lane and St Mary at the Elms: this itinerary makes visible the relationship between the missing medieval place and the current prayer space.

The restoration of Ipswich is not to say that nothing changed for almost five hundred years. It consists of recovering a memory with a new statue, public prayer and collaboration among Christians. This form of continuity, documented by the diocese, allows us to respect history without concealing the destruction of the Reformation or turning a tradition over Nettuno into certainty.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Our Lady of Grace, intercedes before God for Ipswich, for those who pilgrim and for those who work for the unity of Christians. Help us to receive your help with humility, to love the historical truth and to live towards Jesus Christ. Amen.

Documentary update: Anne Wentworth and the restoration of the sanctuary

Anne Wentworth's attributed healing

Anne Wentworth's reservation belongs to the same Marian place in Ipswich and does not justify a separate file. The academic research consulted in the repository of the University of Cambridge identifies the young woman as Anne - or Jane - Wentworth, about 12 years old, and describes seizures and guessing gifts attributed to her case. According to this account, the symptoms were temporarily relieved after a vision of the Virgin and the final improvement was linked to the visit to the sanctuary.

The case is preserved as a historical testimony of an attributed healing, not a proven miracle. The same research explains that Tomás Moro presented the episode as a great miracle in his Dialogue Concerning Heresies; a time reference and an author's claim do not amount to a medical process or canonical recognition. There is no subsequent ecclesial declaration that individually approves this healing.

Contemporary continuity

The sources of the Catholic diocese of East Anglia describe the recovery of the memory of Our Lady of Grace, the destruction of the medieval sanctuary during the Reformation and the present existence of a replica in St Mary at the Elms. The Guild of Our Lady of Grace presents the project as a work of prayer and unity among Christians. Therefore, the Anglican and Catholic participation documented belongs to the contemporary history of the place: it does not convert the identification of the image of Nettuno with the original and the healing stories in approved facts.

The sheet thus retains the two layers without mixing them: the medieval sanctuary and its history, on the one hand, and contemporary ecumenical restoration, on the other. Intercession is asked of Mary; worship corresponds only to God.
