Our Lady of the Rocky (Canmore, Alberta)

Marian devotion

In the Bow Valley, among the Canadian Rocky mountains, the church-shrine of Our Lady of the Rocky is the first Marian sanctuary of the diocese of Calgary. Its title is not born of an apparition or an ancient image, but of the union of two mountain parishes in 2001.

Documented history

The Catholic presence in Canmore predates the present temple. By the end of the 19th century, the people had between two and three hundred inhabitants, mostly coal miners, of whom about ninety were Catholics. With the help of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate they raised a church in a month: the 19 November 1893 The first Catholic church of Canmore, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was blessed by Father Joseph Lestric, superior Oblate in Calgary.

That temple served sixty-seven years. In 1958 the parish council decided to build a new one, and the work was done in six months with voluntary work in shifts - four teams of ten men, from six to ten in the afternoon - in which they also participated neighbors of other confessions. It cost about $15,000 and it ended without debt. The 23 October 1960 Bishop Francis Patrick Carroll blessed the second church, again under the title of the Sacred Heart.

El 1 August 2001 the diocese twined the parish of the Sacred Heart of Canmore with that of Santa Maria de Banff, and the resulting parish received a new name: Our Lady of the Rockies. In 2015 Bishop Frederick Henry reseparated both parishes; Banff regained his title from the Assumption and Canmore kept that of Our Lady of the Rocky.

The project of the present temple was long. There were failed rips, an unfavourable soil survey and six redesigns, which reduced the building from about 43,000 square feet to the final project. In November 2015 the construction was entrusted to the care of St. Joseph. The land was donated by Guy Turcotte and in three months some $711,000 was collected through an equal donation programme. The mass of placement of the first stone was held in situ on 25 June 2017with more than three hundred people; the last mass in the old church of the Sacred Heart was the 28 January 2018.

El 30 May 2020 Bishop William McGrattan dedicated the temple. By the COVID- 19 pandemic only the clergy could attend, and the diocese broadcast it live. The community moved to the new building on June 1.

Two method warnings. First, the parish itself places the Catholic origins of the valley in a mass held near Banff in 1833 and in the baptisms administered by the Jesuit Pierre- Jean de Smet in 1845; they are accounts collected by the parish, not verified in independent historical source, and here they are presented as a parish memory, not as a proven fact. Second: it has been spread that the erection of the sanctuary would take date of 13 May 2020. That date does not appear in any source - neither the sanctuary, nor diocesan, nor in the ecclesiastical repertories - and it is not sustained; the date documented is that of 30 May.

A title born of geography and a parish reform

It should be said without any doubt, because it is what makes this place unique: "Our Lady of the Rocky" is a new and administrative-pastoral title. It does not come from a medieval advocation or an extraordinary event, but from the diocesan decision of 2001 that joined two mountain parishes. The name refers to the surroundings: the Canadian Rockies and the Bow Valley.

The iconography takes up the same idea. The main twenty-four-piece glass, made in Atlanta, represents Mary enthroned with the Child with the Three Sisters mountain range in the background. Among the veteran parishioners the association of these three summits with the three theological virtues - faith, hope and charity - is popular local piety, not doctrine or ancient tradition. The monogram of the sanctuary is «AM», de Auspice Maria"under the protection of Mary."

The temple has a capacity for about 400 thirty people plus a hundred in the nártex, and its liturgical furniture was worked with a lot of marbles over a hundred years. It preserves pieces from previous churches. In 2025 he appeared as the Jubilee Church of the Holy Year, and the 22 August 2025At the Mass of the King of Mary presided over by Bishop McGrattan, the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Rosary was erected there under the authority of the Dominican Provincial Prior. Every summer the diocese celebrates the "Marian Week in the Rocky," with a 25-mile walk between Banff and Canmore.

Qué se venera y quaé significa

What is honoured here is the motherhood of Mary, invoked with a title taken from the landscape surrounding this community. It's intercession, non-worship: Adoration is due only to God, and Mary is venerated by asking to intercede, which always leads to Christ. The sanctuary offers no spiritual techniques or mechanical guarantees; it accompanies through the liturgy, listening, the sacrament of reconciliation and pilgrimage.

The site of the sanctuary speaks of the temple being born "through a remarkable series of divine miracles and synchronies." It is devotional language of the institution itself, and this should be read: there is no ecclesial pronunciation that recognizes any miracle in this place.

Discernment and limits of this sheet

The diocesan Marian Sanctuary of the Diocese of Calgary, appointed by Bishop William McGrattan with effect on the day of the consecration of the temple on 30 May 2020; the text of the decree has not been publicly located. There are no recognized apparitions or miracles associated with this place. The date of "13 May 2020," which is attributed to the erection of the sanctuary, lacks documentary support. The 1833 and 1845 accounts are parochial memory, not independently verified history.

Para meditar y orar

Our God, who wanted your Son to be born of Mary and grow up in a house of work: give us, through the intercession of his Mother, a simple and patient faith among these mountains, like that of those who built this place with their hands. That we know how to look up and not forget the brother who walks by us. By Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
