Marian devotion
Our Lady of Freetown
Freetown, Sierra Leona
The Catholics of Sierra Leone venerate the Virgin Mary in the country's capital.
In Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, the Cathedral of Santa Maria is the center of the Catholic faith. The spiritual missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
Faith after the civil war
Sierra Leone suffered a devastating civil war (1991- 2002). The Catholics were persecuted and their churches destroyed. The Virgin Mary was the mother who comforted them in suffering.
After the war, Catholics rebuilt their churches. The Virgin of Freetown is the mother who guides you in the recovered peace.
