In Aleppo, the city most devastated by the war in Syria, Christians venerate the Virgin Mary. The Cathedral of Santa Maria was destroyed during the fighting, but the faithful continue to pray.
The destruction of Aleppo
During the battle of Aleppo (2012-2016), the city was destroyed by 70%. Thousands of Christians fled. Those who stayed lived in shelters, without water or electricity.
The tradition tells that the Virgin Mary appeared in the rubble of the cathedral to comfort the faithful. The Christians of Aleppo believe that the Virgin will protect them and that the city will be rebuilt.
