Marian claims of Somalia
In Somalia, one of the countries where the Church has suffered the most, there is little visible Christian trail; but the memory of the former Mogadishu Cathedral and the martyrs of charity remains.
) Wonders and Marian Anecdotes of Somalia
Somalia is today one of the most difficult places in the world for the Christian faith: there are virtually no churches or visible community left. But her Marian history, although hurt, deserves to be remembered with respect and hope.
- La Mogadishu Cathedral, beautiful Gothic temple raised in colonial times, was looted and reduced to ruins during the civil war; its naked walls remain as a silent witness of faith.
- The Bishop Salvatore Colombo was killed in 1989 inside her cathedral, and the doctor Annalena Tonelli, martyr of charity, died in 2003 after decades healing the poorest. His dedication is the true Marian devotion of Somalia: to love to the extreme.
History of Marian devotion in Somalia
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Somalia, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.
In Somalia, the Virgin is venerated under various advocacy, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.
Marian devotion in Somalia continues today in the memory of the martyrs of charity who gave their lives for the Somalis. Bishop Salvatore Colombo, killed in 1989 within his cathedral, and Dr. Annalena Tonelli, a secular missionary killed in 2003 in Borama, are witnesses to a Marian faith lived to the extreme. The Missionaries of Charity of St. Teresa of Calcutta were present in Mogadishu and in other cities in the care of the poorest. Although the Christian community has almost disappeared, the seed of the Gospel sown by these witnesses remains alive in the memory of the universal Church.
