Marian devotion
Our Lady of Soweto
Soweto, Sudáfrica
The Catholics of the township of Soweto venerate the Virgin Mary.
In Soweto, the famous Johannesburg township, Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the church of St. John. The Oblate missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
Faith in apartheid
During apartheid, the Catholics of Soweto suffered racial segregation. The Virgin Mary was the mother who comforted them in oppression. The faithful prayed the Rosary for liberation.
In 1976, during the Soweto uprising, Catholics took refuge in the church. The Virgin protected them from police violence.
