Marian devotion
Our Lady of Khartoum
Jartum, Sudan
Sudanese Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the country's capital.
In Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, the Cathedral of St. Mary is the center of the Catholic faith. The spiritual missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
The faith in the underground
Sudan is a predominantly Muslim country. Catholics are a very small minority and have been persecuted for decades. The Virgin Mary is the mother who comforts them in hiding.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects Sudanese Catholics, who are a small but brave minority. The faithful pray the Rosary in their homes, knowing that the Virgin listens to them even if they cannot go to church.
