The Survival of Faith under Communist Persecution

Historia mariana china

The survival of the Catholic faith under communist persecution in China is one of the most extraordinary phenomena in the history of the Church. Despite decades of systematic repression, faith not only survived but experienced significant growth. Devotion to the Virgin Mary was a key factor in this survival.

The dimensions of persecution

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Catholic Church has been systematically persecuted. Foreign missionaries were expelled, churches closed or destroyed, priests and religious imprisoned or executed, and lay people forced to renounce their faith.

Between 1949 and 1979, thousands of Catholic priests, religious and lay people died in prison or in the labour camps. The institutional structure of the Church was almost dismantled during the Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976).

Survival factors

The survival of the Catholic faith in China was due to several factors:

Iglesia clandestine: Catholics who refused to join the patriotic Church formed a clandestine network of communities that kept faith alive in the underground.

Marian devotion: Devotion to the Virgin Mary, especially Our Lady of China, the Miraculous Medal and the Holy Rosary, was a key factor in spiritual survival.

The memory of the martyrs: The example of the martyrs of the persecution of the Boxers (1900) and of the Cultural Revolution strengthened the faith of the survivors.

Marian devotion as a factor of survival

Devotion to the Virgin Mary was one of the most important factors of the survival of the Catholic faith in China. The faithful entrusted themselves to the Virgin Mary, praying the rosary and bearing the Miraculous Medal as a sign of protection.

The devotion to Our Lady of China, born of the miracle of Donglü (1900), became the center of the spiritual life of the clandestine Church. The image of the Virgin with the Child Jesus in Chinese imperial clothing was a symbol of the Chinese Catholic faith and the protection of the Virgin Mary in times of persecution.

The growth of faith

Paradoxically, the persecution not only failed to destroy the Catholic faith in China, but strengthened it. The Catholics who suffered the persecution emerged with a deeper and more mature faith. The blood of the martyrs became the seed of new Christians.

It is currently estimated that there are between 10 and 12 million Catholics in China, a significantly higher figure than before the communist persecution. The Catholic faith has experienced remarkable growth, especially in the rural provinces.

The inheritance of survival

The survival of the Catholic faith under communist persecution is a witness to the strength of the Gospel and the protection of the Virgin Mary. The faith of Chinese Catholics who suffered persecution is an example for the universal Church and a sign of hope for all who fight for religious freedom.
