Since its foundation in 1956, the compound has accompanied different needs: prayer and mission, education of children from poor families, care for children with cerebral palsy and, more recently, day care for the elderly and vulnerable families.

The origin of a pastoral header

The Taitung County Government dates the foundation of Shanghai in 1956 And he attributes it to Father Patrick Veil. Other missionaries of the Bethlehem Society, including August Hensch and Gottfried Stierli, served at the site.

The National Cultural Memory retains a relevant data to understand the regional organization: the priestly residence was later moved from Shanghai to Dawu and the church was entrusted to the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross. The ancient parish of Shanghai was thus a precedent of the present parish of Dawu.

Education for low-income families

In 1963, the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross opened the kindergarten on the grounds Tianqi. Its main purpose was to provide pre-school education for children from poor families in the area.

The school worked for more than half a century. In 2017 it closed due to the decline in births, but the work did not leave the place: under the direction of the Swiss sister Song Yujie it was transformed into a day care centre for vulnerable or lost elderly people and for children in need of support.

Care for children with disabilities

In 1975, the Hogar del Salvador was born with the church, specifically dedicated to the reception and care of children with cerebral palsy. The Taiwan Presidency confirms its creation by local religious and collaborators. In 1999 the institution moved to Taitung City to continue its service there.

To remember this story requires a worthy language. Persons with disabilities are not objects of compassion or instruments to excel to an institution. They are subject to rights, skills, family ties and their own voice. Authentic Christian charity must walk with accessibility, professionalism and respect.

Continued care: the works changed with the needs of each age: childhood, disability and ageing. The common thread is not a concrete building, but responsibility for those who could be neglected.

The Immaculate: grace precedes

The Immaculate Conception does not describe the conception of Jesus. She claims that Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her existence by a unique grace of God, in attention to the merits of Jesus Christ.

St. John Paul II taught that Mary is the first beneficiary of his Son's redeeming work: the grace of Christ acted in advance in her. His holiness is not a self-sufficient feat, but a full fruit of the gift of God freely received.

In Shanghai, this mystery can be seen next to a history of care. The grace received does not enclose the person in private perfection; it opens his eyes to specific needs and moves to create spaces where children, older people and persons with disabilities are recognized and accompanied.

A community within the Dawu network

Today Shanghai depends on the parish of Our Lady of the Assumption of Dawu. It is part of a network of seven missions extended by Dawu and Daren. The pastoral relationship allows for the sharing of ministers and resources, although each community retains its own history and dedication.

Postal location and numbering

The cultural record of the Government of Taiwan publishes the coordinates 22.3404314, 120.8906954 and the direction Zhengtong Road 33. GCatholic uses Zhengtong Road 31, while another local guide refers to Zhengtong 5th Street 30. The three references point to the same set together with the care units.

The map uses the government coordinate, which identifies the enclosure without depending on the variation of numbering. The address is expressed as Zhengtong Road 31-33 and it is recommended to navigate the Chinese name of the temple.

To visit

The compound combines church and community services. It should not be assumed that all its areas are open to the public. It is appropriate to consult with the parish of Dawu, to respect the privacy of users and workers and not to photograph children, the elderly or persons with disabilities.

Prayer to the Immaculate Conception of Shanghai

Mary Immaculate, full of God's grace, accompanies the Shanghai community. Save children, persons with disabilities, older persons and caregivers. Make us recognize in every life a dignity that never diminishes. May faith be translated into competent attention, patience and justice, and may every service humbly lead to Jesus Christ. Amen.
