Marian devotion

In the urban heart of Hsinchu, the Church venerates the Virgin under the title of her Immaculate Heart. The cathedral, known among the inhabitants as church of Beida o Beida Tang by its location next to Beida Road, is the seat from which the bishop serves the Catholic communities of Hsinchu, Taoyuan, Miaoli and its original peoples.

From military compound to a peace house
The place had been part of a military compound during the Japanese administration. The parish establishment dates back to 1955 and the current building was erected in 1957. The local historical tradition places its solemn dedication in 1958, in the celebration of Christ the King. The transformation of the old military space into a church open to prayer offers an eloquent image of reconciliation.
When John XXIII erected the diocese of Hsinchu on March 21, 1961, the temple became its cathedral. Since then he has hosted ordinations, episcopal possession, religious professions and great diocesan celebrations, while being a living parish.
The meaning of the Immaculate Heart
In biblical language, the heart is the center of the person: memory, freedom, love and decision. To contemplate the Heart of Mary means to approach its interior entirely available to God, who keeps the Word, accompanies Jesus and remains faithful by the Cross.
The Church celebrates her memory the day after the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This proximity expresses that Marian devotion leads to Christ. Paul VI presented the Immaculate Heart as a model of perfect love for God and for his neighbor, and invited to live consecration through an existence according to the divine will, the filial service and the imitation of Mary.
An uncultured and living cathedral
The diocese currently publishes celebrations in Chinese, English and Vietnamese, reflecting a diverse community. The cathedral is also a catechetical and pastoral reference point. In the 2025 Jubilee he received a Jubilee cross made with bamboo, an element deeply linked to Hsinchu, uniting the universality of faith with the culture of the place.
The building also has a recognized value for urban memory. In the Taiwanese selection of historical architecture promoted in 2001, he won the first place in the city of Hsinchu and the national number 57. This heritage consideration does not replace its mission: it remains, above all, a church where the Eucharist is celebrated and the people of God are gathered.
Verified location
The diocesan official address is 156 Zhongzheng Road, Hsinchu 300017at the crossing near Beida Road. The published cartographic code for the temple focuses on 24.8091875, 120.9668125. For visit and prayer
As it is a functioning parish, the hours may vary. The diocese itself advises to confirm them before moving. The pilgrim can see here the silent fidelity of Mary and ask for an undivided heart, attentive to the Word and available to serve.
Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Immaculate Heart of Mary, home of the Word and school of fidelity, accompanies the Church of Hsinchu. Teach us to keep the Gospel, to remain with those who suffer and to bring peace where there was division. It forms in us a humble and clean heart that will always lead to Jesus, your Son. Amen.
