Marian devotion

← Back to Taiwan's Marian Advocations
In Hualien, opposite the Pacific and along with the communities of the eastern coast of Taiwan, the Virgin is venerated as Maria Auxiliadora. The same advocation was elected patron of the whole diocese.

The Catholic core of the eastern coast
The Catholic mission of Hualien and Taitung took on new momentum during the 1950s with priests coming from mainland China and missionaries linked to the Paris Foreign Missions. They did not simply move European forms: they studied indigenous languages and customs and prepared biblical materials and songs in local languages.
The church of Meilun was designed within the modern movement of religious architecture and built between 1956 and 1957. Local Catholic sources put the culmination and opening in 1958. From this enclave was articulated a decisive part of the evangelization, formation and pastoral service of the two eastern counties.
Mary, Help of Christians
La invocación Auxilium Christianorum He calls Mary help from the Christian people. The diocese of Hualien explains that this petition was incorporated into the laurean litany by Saint Pius V in 1571 and that it recognizes the maternal intercession of who is Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church.
On May 24, he also joined this Taiwanese community with the prayer of the universal Church for Chinese Catholics. Benedict XVI asked that that day, the feast of Mary Helper, the faithful of the world pray for the Church in China, renewing communion in Christ and calling for a deeper and more visible unity.
Faith, culture and memory
The site today shares the pastoral life with the diocesan center and the Catholic Museum of Hualien. The latter retains objects that document the first evangelization of the region and the encounter between the Catholic faith and indigenous cultures. The Fu Jen Catholic University highlights the role of the cathedral as the starting point and core of the mission in Hualien and Taitung.
The architectural history requires a distinction between the original temple and the subsequent cathedral set: the cartographic bases record the historical building and the present cathedral very close. This tab places its marker in the current cathedral enclosure of Zhongmei Road 168, without turning that proximity into two different advocations.

Prayer to Mary Assistant
Mary Helper, patron of the Church of Hualien, protects the peoples of the eastern coast and strengthens those who proclaim the Gospel with respect and humility. Help us to listen to every language and culture, to serve the most fragile and to remain united to Christ. Be comfort in the difficulty and path of peace for all your children. Amen.
