Maria Auxiliadora de Xuqiao - Amparo and mission in Taitung

The Catholic community of Xuqiao, in the city of Taitung, invokes the Virgin as Maria Auxiliadora, "Help Christians." Born in 1958 and pastoral linked to San José de Malan, this small church brings together missionary memory, community life and inculturation in a region where different languages and peoples live together.

A community documented since 1958

The ecclesial directory records Xuqiao from 1958. The diocesan relationship includes it among the churches attended from the parish of San José de Malan, along with Liji, Jialulan and Daqiao. The document therefore classifies it as an iglesia- mission and not as an autonomous parish.

The human history of the place also appears in the National Cultural Memory of Taiwan. A photograph preserves the celebration of a marriage between a Japanese man and an amis woman, presided over in Xuqiao by Father Gottfried Vonwyl. The document recalls that this missionary learned minnan and amis and promoted readings, songs and forms of communication rooted in local cultures.

The Julius Felder Project

The National Museum of Prehistory of Taiwan conserves twenty plans of the new Xuqiao temple, designed in 1996 by the Swiss brother Julius Felder. The museum chart identifies the Fenggu's solar, with 809 square meters, and explains how the building was arranged at the inner end of a plot near a T. form

Felder worked for decades on the eastern coast of Taiwan. His projects sought to take advantage of local materials, lighting and ventilation, with sober forms that dialogue with the landscape. The plans of Xuqiao are part of the thousands of drawings he gave to the museum for conservation.

What does "Christian Help" mean?

The title does not present Mary as a savior parallel to Christ. The Mother's help is intercession received from God and service to the one Redeemer. Mary accompanies the disciples, guides them to their Son and sustains their fidelity in the trials.

St. John Paul II recalled that the Second Vatican Council was entrusted to Mary as "Help of Christians, Help of Bishops." This invocation is linked to the biblical image of the first community united unanimously with the Mother of Jesus and open to the Holy Spirit.

An advocation especially close to the Chinese Church

The memory of Mary Helper is celebrated the May 24. The universal Church dedicates that same day to praying for the Catholics of China, who especially venerate the Assistant in Sheshan and in many communities and homes.

Pope Francis asked Mary Helper for days of blessing and peace for China, protection for families and communities, fraternal reconciliation, service to the poor and courage to proclaim the Gospel. In Taiwan, the invocation of Xuqiao allows us to pray that same plea without turning faith into a political dispute: Christian unity is built through truth, charity, religious freedom and peace.

Language, culture and evangelization

Father Vonwyl's memory shows an important dimension of the mission in Taitung: learning people's languages and not forcing them to abandon their identity to participate in the Church. The photo of an intercultural wedding held in Xuqiao offers a concrete image of encounter between different stories.

Christian inculturation demands respect and discernment. It is not about appropriating indigenous symbols or reducing a culture to decoration, but about listening to the community, recognizing its dignity and allowing the Gospel to be expressed with its voice.

Verified location and direction discrepancy

The individual file of the temple in Google Maps identifies the Catholic church of Xuqiao in 22.7436327, 121.1356908, within Guiyang Street, and the territorial code of GCatholic leads to the same sector. The museum collection confirms that the site is located in the Fenggu section and gives access to Guiyang Street.

The sources do not match the numbering: GCatholic publishes Guiyang Street, alley 18, number 5, while the individual chart and local references use alley 159, number 5. The verified marker on the building is kept and the difference is noticed to avoid false postal accuracy.

To visit

Xuqiao is a community church, not a tourist attraction with permanent opening. Time and access should be confirmed with the parish of San José de Malan. During a celebration, one must remain silent, ask for permission before photographing and especially respect the image and voice of indigenous people.

Prayer to Mary Auxiliary of Xuqiao

Mary Helper, Mother of the disciples, keeps the community of Xuqiao and all the peoples of Taitung. Hold families, comfort those who suffer and protect the dignity of each language and culture. Alcanzus of Jesus a reconciled heart, courage to serve and peace that does not exclude anyone. It accompanies Christians from China and all Asia on their way of faith. Amen.
