In Iranmeylek, a dao community on the eastern coast of Lanyu, the Virgin is invoked as Maria Estrella del Mar. The invocation here acquires a concrete sense: the life of the island is guided by the ocean, the travel between Lanyu and Taitung and the maritime knowledge transmitted by generations.

Iranmeylek, a sea-oriented place

The National Cultural Memory retains the name dao Iranmeylek next to the administrative name Dongqing. The place was of particular importance for communications, as its beach allowed the transit of ships between Lanyu and Taitung.

To name Maria Estrella del Mar on this coast is not to move an abstract maritime image anywhere. It meets a community whose subsistence, navigation, calendar and knowledge of the environment are deeply related to the ocean.

The church that built the community

The cultural record identifies the temple raised in 1958 like the first Catholic cement church in Lanyu. During the works, Father Alfred Giger provided wheat as compensation to those who came to work, while the population of Iranmeylek assumed the main part of the construction.

On 17 May of that year, the apostolic administrator of Hualien, Monsignor André-Jean Vérineux, and the superior of the Missionary Society of Bethlehem, Jakob Hilber, arrived for the first time in Lanyu to consecrate the church of Maria Estrella del Mar.

An organized community

The same historical memory documents that in February 1985 a group of the Legion of Mary was formed in Iranmeylek. In January 1991, a small Christian community began to share the Gospel.

These milestones do not allow for the calculation of the current number of faithful and their present activity, but they do show that the life of the temple continued after its foundation. The church today belongs to the pastoral network of Lanyu and depends on the parish of San Juan de Hongtou.

Mary, orientation towards the great Light

From ancient times, Christians call Mary Stella Maris, Sea Star. The image reminds the astro that helps to orient itself in the dark, but the Virgin does not replace fate or the main light: she always leads to Jesus Christ.

St. John Paul II explained that Mary remains the Star of the Sea for those who walk the path of faith. Benedict XVI developed the image by contemplating history as a dark and stormy sea: Mary's goodness makes the light of Christ close and teaches to pronounce the "yes" of the disciple.

Protection of those who live and work at sea

The Church invokes Maria Estrella del Mar as a protector of sailors, fishermen and their families. Pope Francis has asked that this intercession renew a maritime pastoral care to the real conditions of those who spend long periods away from their home, suffer isolation or need to defend their working dignity.

In Lanyu, this prayer must include respect for the dao maritime knowledge and the ecosystem that supports island life. Devotion does not replace safety in navigation, just work, environmental protection or community listening; it encourages those responsibilities to be assumed.

Christian faith and dao culture

The Catholic presence is part of the modern history of Iranmeylek, but does not exhaust the dao identity. Their names, accounts, vessels, flying fish cycles, community standards and links to the sea have their own dignity that should not be reduced to religious illustration.

Authentic inculturation listens before interpreting. An outside page like this can only provide documented data and should avoid appropriate knowledge that the community considers reserved or explain its symbols without authorized dao voices.

The individual chart sheet with the full name of the temple sets the building in 22.0577354, 121.5637322. The address, the name Iranmeylek and the position in the settlement converge, so that precise point is used on the map.

To visit

It is a community church on an island of living dao culture. Before entering or photographing you should apply for permission and confirm the hours with the parish of Hongtou. Local restrictions related to beaches, boats, ceremonies, flying fish season and photography of people or cultural goods must be respected.

Prayer to Mary Estrella del Mar of Iranmeylek

Mary, Estrella del Mar, accompanies Iranmeylek and the entire dao people. It protects those who sail, fish and wait for the return of their families. Teach us to look to Jesus Christ, a light that does not turn off, and to take care of the ocean with responsibility. Keep the language, memory and dignity of this community; grant comfort in storms, justice at work and peace in each home. Amen.
