Between the mountains and the coast of Hualien, the church of Xiulin is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. Mary glorified in body and soul announces that the salvation of Christ reaches the whole person and offers hope to a community located in the territory of the Truku people.

The Assumption: a promise for the whole person
The Church professes that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was brought in body and soul to the glory of heaven. It is not a flight from the material world, but an affirmation of its dignity: the body, history and human ties are called to the resurrection in Christ.
Pope Francis presented Mary as a disciple always "on the way." After the Annunciation it was set in motion to serve Elizabeth; he followed Jesus during his life and, at the end of his pilgrimage, was received with his Son. The Assumption thus unites eternal hope and concrete service.
A different parish within Xiulin
The directory of the diocese confirms the title, the direction and the related chapels. This church should not be confused with the nearby pilgrimage place dedicated to Our Lady of the Poor, which has another direction, another devotional history and its own page on this map.
Nor is it the Catholic church of Xincheng built on the ancient Shinto shrine, although both are part of the same pastoral area. Registering each one separately avoids mixing advocacy and allows you to understand the true network of communities.
A Church that prays in various languages
The pastoral information of the decanate indicates the use of mandarin, amis and truku. This diversity recalls that faith does not belong to a single culture. The mother tongue makes it possible to express in greater depth the prayer, duel, gratitude and memory of a community.
The Truku people have their own history, social organization, tissues, stories and relationship with the mountains. The Catholic presence must be narrated without such identity: the indigenous faithful are not an ornament of mission, but subjects of their ecclesial life.
Sanzhan y
The parish also serves the communities of Sanzhan and Kawan. In extended territories, the chapels allow for the celebration and gathering closer to the families. Catechists, local leaders and faithful support the continuity of prayer between priestly visits.
This network well reflects the mystery of the Assumption: looking to heaven does not turn away from the ways of the earth. glorified Mary encourages you to travel distances, accompany the older and maintain small communities together.
Community life documented
The public records of the municipality of Xiulin show that in 2024 the diocese organized a camp of life and faith in the mountain linked to the church. It is a current and verifiable indication that the building continues to function as a pastoral and educational centre.
These activities should be carried out with particular attention to the protection of children and vulnerable persons. Parish hospitality never justifies photographing or disseminating images of participants without consent.
Post-earthquake hope
Hualien and Truku territory have suffered earthquakes, breakdowns and communications cuts. The Assumption proclaims that no faithful life is lost before God. This hope does not replace prevention or reconstruction: it encourages care for homes, roads, temples and support networks.
Mary in glory invites her to look up, but also to get on her way to serve. Christian prayer becomes concrete when it accompanies those who have lost their home, their work or a loved one.

The diocese publishes the direction 51 Xiulin Road. Google's individual record identifies the building as "Xiulin Our Lady of the Assumption Church" and places it in 24.1193772, 121.6247766, code 7QP34J9F+QW. The point is the temple, not the city center or the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Poor.
To visit
It's an active parish church. Time and conditions for access should be checked, especially after heavy rains or earthquakes. The liturgy, family privacy and Truku cultural expressions must be respected; no people or ceremonies were photographed without permission.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Assumption of Xiulin
Our Lady of the Assumption, a sign of hope and woman always on the way, accompanies Xiulin, Sanzhan and Kawan. It protects the Truku people, their language, their culture and their mountains. It comforts those who suffer the wounds of earthquakes and strengthens those who rebuild. Teach us to look to heaven without abandoning the service of our brothers. Take us to Jesus, the winner of death. Amen.
