Marian devotion

← Back to Taiwan's Marian Advocations
In front of the historic sanctuary dedicated to Koxinga, in the old city of Tainan, a Catholic cathedral of unmistakable Chinese fisonomy is erected. It is consecrated to Our Lady of China and expresses, through its advocation, its architecture and its liturgy, that the Christian faith can take root in a culture while leading Jesus Christ.
Chinese name: The Diocese of the Holy Mother of China.
Common name: catedral de Kaishan Road.
Place: 195 Kaishan Road, distrito Centro-Oeste, Tainan 70047.
Prosecutor: Stanislaus Lo Kuang, primary obispo de Tainan.
Construction: iniciada en 1963.
Dedication: March 19, 1964.
Jurisdiction: Catholic diocese of Tainan.
Diocesan Patronage: Our Lady, Queen of China.
Special condition: Jubilee church in 2016 and 2025.
A cathedral for the new diocese
The diocese of Tainan was erected in 1961 and took the Virgin as her patron under the title of Queen of China. His first bishop, Monsignor Stanislaus Lo Kuang, promoted in 1963 the construction of a cathedral on Kaishan Road, opposite the Koxinga temple. The building was solemnly dedicated on March 19, 1964 by the pontifical representative Giuseppe Caprio and was named after Our Lady of China.
The parish has since remained the seat of the episcopal chair and center of diocesan celebrations, catechesis and sacramental life. The 2016 and 2025 retirement appointments added a specific pilgrimage function to their regular service.
The Atvocation of Our Lady of China
The national title was developed in the Chinese Church during the first half of the 20th century and was linked to China's consecration to the Virgin. The historical documentation preserved by the cathedral itself relates its image to Donglu, in Hebei, and to the subsequent election of Mary as Queen of China.
Invocation does not make Mary a separate figure for each nation. She looks at her as the same Mother of Jesus, represented with traits, garments and symbols that are understandable to the Chinese people. His function is maternal and intercesive: to present Christ and to teach him to receive his Gospel.
Architecture and inculturation
The cathedral takes forms of traditional Chinese architecture: covered with tiles, high alleys, red colour and composition that dialogue with the historical environment of Tainan. In the presbytery there is also a censary and the Chinese character "sacrifice," elements explained locally in relation to the veneration of God and respect for the ancestors permitted by the Church.
This inculturation does not seek to disguise the temple, but to express the faith in an artistic language of its own. The Eucharistic celebration remains the center, and cultural signs are directed to Christian prayer.
Mary and prayer for the Chinese Church
The cathedral maintains a spiritual link with Chinese Catholics inside and outside the continent. Benedict XVI asked that every May 24, the memory of Mary Helper, the universal Church pray for the Church in China. Although Our Lady of China and Mary Helper are different titles, they converge in the same supplication for the unity, perseverance and peace of the believing people.
Verified location
The diocese confirms the direction 195 Kaishan Road. The cultural record of the Cheng Kung National University sets the building in 22.9871711, 120.2090574; the position coincides with OpenStreetMap and the ecclesiastical code 7QJ2X6P5 + WJ. The marker corresponds to the cathedral enclosure, not to the nearby Koxinga shrine.
To visit
It is a parish in operation and not just a monument. It is appropriate to consult the diocesan hours, to dress and behave with respect and not to interfere in the mass or in the prayer of the faithful. Its situation also makes it possible to understand the visual dialogue between the cathedral and the religious heritage of the city.
Prayer to Our Lady of China
Our Lady of China, Mother of Christ and patron of the Church of Tainan, keeps the families, strengthens those who suffer and keep the faithful in unity. Teach us to proclaim the Gospel with humility, to respect all the true and beautiful of every culture and to offer our life to God with a sincere heart. Drive everyone to your Son, Prince of Peace. Amen.
