Izukan, a moved mountain community

The Encyclopedia of Indigenous Peoples identifies Izukan as a community of Gufeng mostly Bunun. The data for 2016 were 109 households, 97 per cent indigenous and 86 per cent Bunun. Bunun varieties are spoken from the Isbukun and Takbanuaz groups.

Local history is marked by successive movements from mountainous territories, some forced during the Japanese occupation and others caused by temporary ones. The families ended up settling at the current location after visiting different places in the region.

This memory teaches that the church cannot be presented separately from the territory and experience of the people. Mary accompanies a concrete community, with language, kinship and history of her own.

A mission founded in 1960

GCatholic records the church of Fátima de Luntian from 1960. The Hualien directory includes it among the small communities served from the parish and sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes of Zhuoxi.

A sufficiently solid chronicle on material construction or a foundational ceremony has not been located. That's why the record keeps the year registered without inventing names, exact dates or undocumented circumstances.

Precise classification: Luntian is a mission dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. It is not a canon sanctuary or a place of apparitions. The recognized apparitions occurred in Cova da Iria, Portugal, in 1917.

The message of Fatima

On May 13, 1917, three pastoral children - Lucia, Francis and Jacinta - said they had seen a luminous Lady in Fatima. The apparitions continued for six months. The message called for prayer, conversion, penance and trust in Mary's Immaculate Heart.

John Paul II summarized his core as an evangelical call to conversion and prayer. The official sanctuary of Fatima also recalls the request to pray the Rosary daily for the peace of the world and the end of the war.

Devotion does not consist in fear, calculations of the future, or curiosity of secrets. Its center is to return to God, receive the sacraments, pray for others and live charity.

A pilgrimage that came to Luntian

On the occasion of the centenary of the Legion of Mary, a pilgrim image visited communities in Taiwan. The association's newsletter documents his arrival at the church of Fátima de Luntian on September 25.

The image was received from the community of Fumin and the Eucharist was celebrated in Luntian. The chronicle speaks of prayer, joy and the Rosary that remained as a reminder of the visit. This testimony confirms that the church is not just a name in a directory: it continues to be integrated into a living Marian network.

A vocation born in Izukan

The indigenous encyclopedia reminds Father Paki Ispalakan, born in Luntian and ordained priest in 1985. He was the first priest from the community and later served in parishes in different municipalities of Hualien and Taitung, as well as providing pastoral care in a prison.

His history alone does not demonstrate a causal relationship with the advocation, but it does show that the Catholic community produced a vocation at the service of other communities. It must be counted with respect for its indigenous name and avoid appropriate its biography as a simple devotional ornament.

Fatima and peace in a Bunun community

To pray the Rosary for peace acquires a concrete sense in a people whose history knew displacements and loss of control over its territory. Christian peace does not require to forget that memory: it invites us to unite truth, justice, healing and coexistence.

Marian prayer can also support the language and community ties when expressed from the voice of its inhabitants. The Bunun culture should not be reduced to music or ceremonies seen from the outside; it belongs to a living people who decide how to share it.

Verified location

GCatholic places the mission in the Luntian community and provides the code 7QM36795+C8, focused on 23.2185625, 121.2583125. The individual chart of the church of Luntian finishes the point of the enclosure a 23.2186583, 121.2583626. Both data match within Izukan; the most accurate individual point is used.

To visit

It is a small mission and should not be assumed to remain open. It is appropriate to consult with the parish of Zhuoxi in advance, to respect community activities and to ask for permission before photographing people, celebrations or cultural spaces. The visitor should avoid interfering in traditional Bunun ceremonies.

Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima of Luntian

Our Lady of Fatima, accompanies Izukan and all the Bunun families. Keep your tongue, your memory and your land; strengthen those who serve the community and provoke generous vocations. Teach us to pray the Rosary, to convert the heart and to work for a peace united with truth and justice. Take our prayer to Jesus. Amen.
