← Back to Taiwan's Marian Advocations

On the streets of Shuili, on a silent hillside of Nantou County, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima is part of the spiritual realm of the Wanfu Trapense monastery. The contemplative prayer of the monks and the Marian pilgrimage are here in the same landscape.

Chinese name: In the water is the Holy Mother of Fatima.

Place: Shuili Sixth Road 20, Shuili, Nantou.

Blessing of the monastery and the pavilion of Fatima: 2 February 1993.

Custody: Cisteran Order of Strict Observance, Trapans.

Jurisdiction: Catholic diocese of Taichung.

Main celebration: diocesan pilgrimage around May 13.

The monastery of Wanfu

Two monks searched the Nantou mountains for a place to establish the first monastery of the Strict Observance in Taiwan. The community adopted the name Wanfu, which evokes the greeting to Mary, and developed in Shuili a life focused on liturgy, work and silence.

The chronology published by the monastery itself records that the 2 February 1993 the bishop of Taichung blessed the monastery and the pavilion dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. Father Nicholas Kao Shih-chien, a great diffuser of this advocation in the Chinese world, was linked to the impulse of several chapels of Fatima and to this work of Shuili.

A diocesan pilgrimage

The diocese of Taichung celebrates its annual Marian pilgrimage. The program usually includes Rosario, via the crucis, reconciliation and Eucharist presided over by the bishop. The official call of 2023 expressly explained his intentions: reparation, conversion of sinners and world peace.

The continuity of these celebrations, documented for years by the diocese and by Catholic Weekly, confirms that it is not only a private image within a monastery, but a reference sanctuary for the local Church.

Precise classification: the apparitions of Fatima took place in Portugal in 1917. Shuili does not present an apparition of his own; it is a contemplative and diocesan implantation of that recognized advocation.

Fatima and contemplative life

The message of Fatima calls for persevering prayer, conversion and surrender to God. Trapense life gives these calls a daily form: silence, salmodia, Eucharist and work. The pilgrim thus enters a place where Marian devotion does not separate itself from the centrality of Christ.

Verified location

The ecclesial sources coincide in the direction Shuili Sixth Road 20. The individual cartographic code of the monastery and sanctuary focuses on 23.8334375, 120.8538125. The marker should not be confused with the nearby parish of Maria Reina de Shuili, located about a hundred and twenty metres away.

Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima of Shuili

Mother of the Rosary, receive our prayer in the silence of Shuili. Teach us to listen to your Son, to convert the heart and to offer our life for peace. Hold the monks of Wanfu, the diocese of Taichung and all the pilgrims; that contemplation be transformed into mercy and service. Amen.
