Marian devotion
← Back to Taiwan's Marian Advocations
In the Alolong community, within the municipality of Guangfu, the small church of Our Lady of Lourdes of Danong keeps the Marian presence alive among the local families. Its scale is humble, but a pilgrimage chronicle allows it to be united with three other communities in the parish of Dama by prayer and encounter.
Chinese name: The Madonna Lourdes.
Local cartographic name: The Church of the Holy Mother of Lourdes.
International name: Tanung Church of Our Lady of Lourdes.
Advocation: Our Lady of Lourdes.
Place: Alolong community, Xifu village, Guangfu municipality, Hualien County.
Jurisdiction: Catholic diocese of Hualien, decanate of Guangfu.
Ecclesial status: iglesia- mission dependent on the parish of the Conversion of St. Paul of Lady.
Marian party: February 11.
Danong and Alolong: two names of the same place
Ecclesial sources record the church with the name Danong, while the cartographic record adds in parentheses Alternative. The National Archive of the Taiwan Cultural Memory identifies Alolong as a community in the village of Xifu, mainly populated by the Amis people.
This double name helps to place the church accurately and at the same time to recognize the community name. The document does not give the population a uniform religious practice: it documents the presence of a Catholic mission within a living and culturally own community.
A mission linked to the parish of Dama
The directory of the diocese of Hualien lists Danong among the four chapels dependent on the parish of the Conversion of St. Paul of Dama, along with Daquan, Daxing and Mafo. The international register of GCatholic confirms the same dependence and the secondment to the decanate of Guangfu.
Therefore, Danong should not be described as an autonomous parish. His sacramental and pastoral life is part of a network of small communities accompanied by Lady.
Mary visits the four communities
The newsletter of the Legion of Mary retains the account of a pilgrimage organized on the occasion of its centenary. After the mass, a comitiva of twenty-three vehicles moved a Marian image from Futian by the four communities attended by Lady.
The first stop was precisely the church of Lourdes de Danong. There the priest led the prayer before continuing to Mafo, Daquan and Daxing. The itinerary was prepared with a special focus on the elderly and people with reduced mobility, so that they could participate near their homes.
The scene expresses a form of pilgrimage in which not only the faithful travel to a great sanctuary: the image of Mary walks the rural roads and brings together scattered communities. Danong appears as a gateway to a rosary of small churches.
The message from Lourdes
The dedication refers to the apparitions of 1858 in the Grotto of Massabielle, in France. Benedict XVI recalled that his essential message calls for prayer, penance and conversion. Mary presented herself to Saint Bernardite as the Immaculate Conception and always led attention to Christ.
Adopting this title in Hualien does not make Danong a new Massabielle. It means receiving that spirituality in a specific community: praying in simplicity, caring for those who cannot travel and strengthening communion between neighbouring peoples.
A Catholic presence in Amis territory
The National Archive of Cultural Memory places Alolong in Xifu and notes its majority character Amis. It also documents its proximity to road 193 and its territorial relationship with the neighbouring communities of the valley.
In presenting this church it is necessary to respect the identity and voice of its inhabitants. The Amis culture is not an ornament for the visitor. Photographs, celebrations, songs or community stories require listening, context and permission where appropriate.

To visit
This is an active rural mission and not a tourist monument. It is appropriate to confirm the celebrations with the parish of Dama, not to enter if the enclosure is closed and to ask permission before photographing people or liturgical acts. The visit can be lived as a prayer pause within the Guangfu valley.
Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes of Danong
Mary Immaculate, Lady of Lourdes, accompanies the Alolong community and the families of Danong. Come closer to the elderly, the sick and those who cannot walk long ways. Unite Danong, Mafo, Daquan and Daxing in faith; keep the Amis people, their tongue and their memory. Take us always to Jesus and teach us to live in prayer, conversion and service. Amen.
