Our Lady of the Rosary of Anshuo - Memory and hope in Aljungic

Marian devotion

← Back to Taiwan's Marian Advocations

In Aljungic, a paiwan community administratively known as Anshuo, a church founded in 1955 is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. To pray here the mysteries of Christ means to do so within a history before the temple: diverse lineage, forced displacement, reconstruction of ties and contemporary defence of the language.

Aljungic antes de la iglesia

The name Aljungic is on the official register of indigenous communities in Taiwan. Local sources relate to the collection of smaller units in a larger community. The Chinese form Anshuo was then consolidated by transliteration and administrative changes.

The population does not come from a single settlement. The National Cultural Memory describes several family groups and recalls that families from communities located in the upper basin of Fangshan were forced by the Japanese administration to move towards the lower course of the Anshuo River between 1939 and 1940.

Over time, people from other Paiwan sites were incorporated and people have also come from different regions. Aljungic therefore retains a living Paiwan identity and, at the same time, a historical experience of regrouping and complex coexistence.

Order of history: the church began in 1955, but Aljungic did not begin then. The Catholic faith was inserted into a community with its own territory, lineage, authorities, wounds and practices.

A mission registered since 1955

GCatholic and the historical pastoral inventory place the origin of the church in 1955. The diocese of Hualien retains photographs under the exact title of Our Lady of the Rosary of Anshuo and includes it within the network served from Dawu.

A sufficiently detailed primary chronicle on the first building, its builders or the dedication ceremony has not been located. The page thus retains the accredited year and avoids completing these gaps with stories from neighbouring churches.

The Rosary, contemplative memory

The Rosary is not an empty repetition or a formula intended to achieve automatic results. John Paul II defined it as a prayer of Christological orientation: with Mary the face and events of Jesus Christ are considered.

His mysteries go through joy, light, pain and glory. They allow the whole life - birth, family, proclamation, injustice, death and hope - to be brought to prayer. The rhythm of the avemaria offers space to listen to the Gospel and let it transform decisions.

In a community marked by forced migration, the Rosary can be a memory exercise that does not erase suffering. The painful mysteries allow for the name of losses; the glorious proclaims that violence and death do not have the last word.

United

The public records of 2023 and 2024 include Anshuo among Catholic communities supported to promote an indigenous language. This continuity indicates that the church is involved in a current effort of transmission, not only in the preservation of a historical memory.

To pray the Rosary in paiwan can unite generations and return to the tongue a daily and sacred place. Translation should be made with competent speakers and with respect for local variants; it is not appropriate to impose from the outside a language form as if the entire Paiwan nation was homogeneous.

Report of movements

In 2020 Aljungic commemorated 80 years of collective transfer. The descendants visited the community and remembered the efforts of their ancestors by crossing the mountain range and establishing crops in the new place.

The commemoration does not make coercive displacement a simple history of progress. To appreciate the resistance of the ancestors can live together with the recognition of injustice and the defence of the territory, identity and decision-making capacity of the present community.

Verified location

GCatholic publishes Anshuo Village 63 address and code 7QJ27V8+HF. The individual chart of the temple sets the enclosure in 22.2938835, 120.8661582. Name, number, code and position within Aljungic match, so that precise coordinate is used.

To visit

It is an iglesia- active mission within a paiwan community. Celebrations with the parish of Dawu should be confirmed. The proximity of the Aljungic route does not turn the village into a tourist decoration: permission to photograph people, acts or symbols and to use local guides when you want to know the community history.

Prayer to Our Lady of the Rosary of Anshuo

Our Lady of the Rosary, accompanies Aljungic and all his families. It keeps the memory of those who were displaced, strengthens the elderly who keep the language and the young who receive it. Teach us to contemplate with Mary the mysteries of Jesus, to tell the truth about the wounds and to work for a hope that reconceives without erasing justice. Amen.
