History of Marian devotion in Tanzania
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Tanzania, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.
In Tanzania, the Virgin is venerated under various calls, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

Mary in the land of Kilimanjaro and Lake Victoria
Tanzania, a country of great cultural and religious wealth, has a Catholic community that accounts for about 31 per cent of the population, the country with the largest number of Catholics in East Africa. Evangelization began in the 19th century with the Benedictine missionaries, the White Fathers and the Holy Spirit missionaries. The Abbey of Peramiho, founded by the German Benedictine in 1898, became a centre of irradiation of the Marian faith in southern Tanzania. The shrine of Our Lady of Peramiho, with its impressive Roman-style abacial church, is one of the most important pilgrimage places in the country. The image of Our Lady of Peramiho, a wooden size brought from Bavaria, is venerated by thousands of faithful who come to the sanctuary every year.
The Marian devotion in Tanzania is especially expressed in the Bukoba region, on the banks of Lake Victoria, where the shrine of Our Lady of Bukoba is located. This region, one of the most Catholic in the country, was evangelized by the White Fathers led by Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa, the first African Cardinal. The Bukoba shrine, built in 1950, is a pilgrimage place that attracts faithful from Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. The Virgin Mary is invoked under the title "Mama Mary" (Mother Mary) in Swahili, and the prayer of the Rosary is a universal practice among Tanzanian Catholics. Every 8 December, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated with special devotion throughout the country.
Our Lady of Fatima of Dar is Salaam
In Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital of Tanzania, the parish of Our Lady of Fatima in the Kariakoo district is one of the most active Catholic centers in the country. The church, built in 1960 by the White Fathers, is a modernist building with a concrete façade that evokes a tent, symbolizing the pilgrim Church. The image of Our Lady of Fatima, a teak wood size carved by Zanzibar craftsmen, presides over the main altar. The parish is known for its Marian prayer program, which includes the prayer of the Rosary in Swahili every afternoon at 18: 00, a tradition that has continued continuously since 1962.
"Our Lady of Fatima of Dar es Salaam, pray for us.
Our Lady of Mount the Miracle of Moshi
In Moshi, the city at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, the shrine of Our Lady of Mount the Miracle (Our Lady of the Mountain of Miracle) is an important Marian pilgrimage centre. The sanctuary was built in 1985 on the hillside of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a spectacular view of the highest mountain in Africa. The image of the Virgin, a size of olive wood donated by the Italian Church, represents Mary standing on a cloud, with the Child Jesus in arms, looking at the Kilimanjaro. Local tradition tells that the Virgin appeared to a Masai pastor in 1983 in this place, asking for the construction of a sanctuary for the reconciliation of the Chagga and Masai peoples.
"Our Lady of Mount the Miracle of Moshi, pray for us.
