The Mission of San José was founded by the Franciscans in 1720. It's the biggest and best-preserved mission in Texas.
Mission History
The mission was dedicated to St. Joseph, but the Virgin Mary is venerated as a protector of the community. The present church was built in 1768 and is a jewel of Spanish colonial architecture.
Every year, thousands of pilgrims visit the mission to celebrate the feast of San José on March 19.
The San José Mission is the largest and best preserved in Texas (1720).
