In Nukualofa, the capital of Tonga, the Cathedral of Santa Maria is the center of the Catholic faith. The Marist missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
Faith in the Kingdom of Tonga
Tonga is the only kingdom in the Pacific. Catholics are a significant minority, about 15% of the population. The Virgin Mary is the mother who protects them on the islands.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects the Tongan Catholics from the cyclones that hit the Pacific. The faithful pray the Rosary before the storms, asking for the protection of the Virgin.
