Monastery of Treskavec
At 1,271 metres above Mount Zlatovrv, eight kilometres north of Pribep, the Treskavec Monastery, one of the oldest monastic assemblies in North Macedonia, rises. Founded on a Paleocrist basilica of the V-VI centuries and rebuilt in the 14th century by Serbian kings Stefan Milutin and Stefan Dušan, his church is the one who has been called to sleep the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a monastery of the Orthodox Church of North Macedonia.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The site was inhabited by Christian communities since the 5th and 6th centuries, when a Paleocrist basilica preceded the present monastic set; archaeologists have found in the place mosaics and remains of that foundational period.
- The monastery was rebuilt and expanded in the 14th century by Serbian kings Stefan Milutin and Stefan Dušan, who provided it with the Church of the Sleep and made the enclave a spiritual center relevant to the entire medieval Balkan region.
- In the mid-16th century, when the place was in decline after the earthquakes and Ottoman pressure, the Knez Dimitrije Pepić of Kratovo - who died in 1566 - began its renewal and left foundational inscriptions that historians retain as testimony to this rebirth.
- Among its walls are preserved Byzantine frescoes from the 15th century, among which is what researchers consider the first known representation of the Celestial Court in the Balkan iconographic art.
- In its time of greatest splendour the monastery housed about a hundred monks; a fire that occurred in the early 21st century destroyed a large part of the conventual dependencies, and today only a monk guards the church and its frescoes.
Sleeping of the Blessed Virgin · Orthodox Monastery
The Monastery of Treskavec, raised more than a thousand meters above the mountains surrounding Pribep, is one of the most venerated Orthodox shrines in North Macedonia. His church, dedicated to the Sleeping of the Mother of God - an advocation that the Catholic tradition shares under the name of Asunción - gathers centuries of uninterrupted prayer, first-magnitude iconographic art and the memory of a Christian faith that has survived earthquakes, fires and centuries of adversity. It is honestly stated that it belongs to the Orthodox Church of North Macedonia; devotion to the sleeping and glorified Theotokos is, however, a common heritage of the whole Church.
"Mother of God, Theotokos glorious in your sleep, which the monks of Treskavec called upon you from the tops of Macedonia for centuries of silence and prayer, intercede for the unity of Christians and for all who seek you with a sincere heart. May the contemplation of your glory be a preview of eternal life for those who pilgrim in this world. Amen.
