The Namugongo Sanctuary is the place where 22 Ugandan Catholics were martyred in 1886. The Virgin Mary is venerated with the martyrs as a protector of the faith.
The martyrs of Uganda
The martyrs were executed by order of King Mwanga II for refusing to give up their faith. The Virgin Mary was the mother who comforted them in martyrdom.
Every June 3, the Ugandan faithful celebrate the feast of the Uganda Martyrs, praying the Rosary to the Virgin.
