Marian devotion
Our Lady of Samarkand
Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Uzbek Catholics venerate the Virgin in the old Silk Road city.
In Samarkand, the jewel of the Silk Route, the small Catholic community venerates the Virgin Mary in a discreet church. The Polish and German missionaries established devotion when they were deported during the Soviet era.
Faith on the Silk Road
Samarkand was for centuries a meeting point of civilizations: Persians, Mongols, Chinese, Russians. The Catholics arrived with the Soviet deportees and planted faith on Muslim land.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects Christians in Samarkand, a city where Islam is the majority religion. The faithful pray the Rosary in their homes, recalling that the Virgin is the mother of all.
