Our Lady of Port Vila

Vanuatuan Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the country's capital.
In Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, the Cathedral of Santa Maria is the center of the Catholic faith. The Marist missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
Faith on the islands of Vanuatu
Vanuatu is an archipelago of more than 80 islands. Catholics are a significant minority, about 15% of the population. The Virgin Mary is the mother who protects them on the islands.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects Vanuatuan Catholics from the cyclones and volcanoes that hit the Pacific. The faithful pray the Rosary before the storms, asking for the protection of the Virgin.
