Marian devotion
Our Lady of Coromoto
Guanare, Venezuela
The Virgin of Coromoto is a patron of Venezuela. He appeared to an indigenous cacique.
In 1652, the Cacique Coromoto saw a white woman dressed in white in her house. The woman gave her a small image of the Virgin and told her to build a church.
The cacique, which was pagan, did not listen. But the image had powers: when someone looked at it, it felt a strange peace. The missionaries consecrated it and built the church of Guanare.
The original image, only 9 cm, is kept in a gold relic. It is the smallest Marian image in Latin America.
