Apparition approved. The Virgin appeared to the persecuted Catholics in the jungle.
In 1798, Emperor Cħnh Thħnh banned Catholicism in Vietnam. Thousands of Catholics fled to the La Vang forest, where many were sick.
As they prayed the Rosary every night at the foot of a tree, a woman appeared in the branches, dressed in a Vietnamese ai dai, holding a child. The Virgin told them to take leaves from the trees to make a medicine. The sick were cured.
The Virgin appeared 18 times. In 1961, Pope John XXIII raised the church to the lower basilica. A new basilica was built in 2012.
