Our Lady of Saigon
Ciudad Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
Vietnamese Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the ancient Saigon.
In Ho Chi Minh City (ancient Saigon), the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the center of the Catholic faith. The French missionaries established devotion in the 17th century.
Faith under Communism
Vietnam is a communist country where religion is controlled by the State. Catholics are a significant minority, about 7% of the population. The Virgin Mary is the mother who comforts them under communism.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects Vietnamese Catholics. The faithful pray the Rosary in their homes, knowing that the Virgin listens to them even if they cannot go to church.
