Ntra. Madam. Queen of the Rosary of Phát Diņm - The Cathedral of Stone
The Cathedral of Phát Diņm, the seat of the homonymous diocese about 120 kilometres south of Hanoi, is dedicated to Our Lady Queen of the Rosary. It was raised between 1875 and 1891 under the direction of the Vietnamese priest Phêrô n Lħc, "CħSáu," who without being an architect raised in stone and wood a unique set that melts the Catholic church with traditional Vietnamese architecture.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- Unrepeatable syno- Vietnamese architecture: walls and arches of stone under curved roofs of pagoda, with dragons, phoenix and turtles living with Catholic iconography. Graham Greene wrote that he seemed "more Buddhist than Christian."
- The ship, about 64 by 18 meters, rests on 52 pillars; 16 of them are 11-meter Li wood columns, and the stone was carried without modern machinery from distant quarries.
- The ensemble, of about 6 hectares, includes the bell-tower Phňng Đành (1899) with bronze bell of two tons and five chapels, including that of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (1883).
- Bombed on August 15, 1972 during the Vietnam War, it was restored with such fidelity that there are hardly any traces left; the tomb of Trħn Lħc rests in the atrium of its cathedral.
