Tradition and history: a necessary distinction
Regarding the Bien Aparecida, it is important not to confuse two levels.
The tradition places the origin of devotion in the finding of the small image, in 1605, in the window of a hermitage on the top of Brown, near Hoz de Brown, in Ampuero. It is the foundational account that popular piety conserves as an apparition.
La documented history In contrast, it bears witness to a firm and verifiable devotion: in the 18th century, the Cantabrian residents of Madrid venerated it as a patron, as the "Curious Journal" (1786) and the "Diario de Madrid" (1807 and 1808) take note. In 1905, Pope Pius X declared her patron of the diocese of Santander, and in 1955 was crowned canonically by the bishop. The devotion of the people, real and rooted, preceded their official recognition.

The pedestal consists of four bands: the top one green, the two middle ones gold, and the bottom one black. Its creator and origin are unknown, and it dates no earlier than the 15th century. Today it remains intact, covered with exquisitely beautiful vestments.
