Main data
Origin and history
La devoción a Our Lady of Help and Success in Ilhabela (former São Sebastião, northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil) dates back to the Portuguese colonial era and is linked to the evangelization of the coast and the maritime life of the region.
According to the documented history, la iglesia de Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda e Bom Sucesso comenzó to build hacia 1697 and was concluded around 1718in a sober colonial style of Jesuit influence. This ancient "matrix" was raised on the top of a hill, dominating the villa and the port, which reinforced its role as a spiritual point of reference for sailors and inhabitants of the island. The original structure was built with local materials - stone, sea shells and whale oil - typical technique of the Brazilian liturgical colonial architecture.
As for the tradition / legend, several news sources highlight Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda as a protector of sailors and fishermen of Ilhabela, to whom he would have offered "help" and "good success" in traverses and labours, especially in the midst of storms or dangers of shipwreck. However, there are no specific ancient texts (specific miracles, apparitions or detailed foundational accounts) published by the sanctuary or the diocese that make it possible to specify an original prodigious fact; it is rather a progressively consolidated devotion in the religious life of the island community. There is no formal decree in the sources consulted to proclaim the historical co-patron of Ilhabela, although the church is recognized as one of the main religious symbols of the city.
(Important location note: Ilhabela belongs to the state of São Paulo, Brazil; there is no local title of "Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda" in Ilhabela associated with department of São Paulo, Colombia.)
The image and the sanctuary
La Iglesia/Santuario de Our Lady of Help and Success is presented in the tourist and devotional sources as a temple of modest dimensions, of style colonial sencillowith white façade, blue elements and a bell tower, located on the top of the city, overlooking the São Sebastião channel. It is located in the Colonel Julião Squarein the historical centre of Ilhabela, and is one of the main points of religious and heritage interest of the island. It does not have the title of minor basilicaor that it has been declared National sanctuary; is commonly known as Church o Sanctuary Our Lady of Help and Good Success, being an important local / diocesan sanctuary, but without a specific national recognition documented.
As for the image by Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda, the interior photographs show a Marian representation on the altar, but the sources consulted do not describe in detail their iconographic type (whether it is wood size, baroque style, size, specific attributes, presence or not of the Child, etc.). There is no official description that allows the exact material or artistic style of the original image to be safely affirmed; therefore, these data no constan documented in available sources.
Sponsorship and coronation
La Iglesia de Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda e Bom Sucesso es uno de los main historical temples of Ilhabela and a sign of the religious identity of the city. Several sources of dissemination present it as a traditional center of local Marian devotion, closely linked to the population of fishermen and sailors. However, in accessible online documentation no consta an official decree declaring it patron o canonically proclaimed co-patron of Ilhabela, neither of the diocese or of a greater ecclesiastical constituency. Therefore, patronage can be considered historical and devotionalbut no consta in documents cited by the diocese or by the sanctuary.
In relation to a canonical coronation, no reference has been found in reliable ecclesial sources (dioceses, episcopal conferences, official Catholic press) to a pontifical decree or to a formal act of coronation of the image of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda e Bom Sucesso. Therefore, it should be strictly stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
La fiesta litúrgica principal de Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda en Ilhabela se celebra el August 15, coinciding with the solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the date on which masses and celebrations are concentrated in honor of the patron of the temple. This date is in line with other devotions of "Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda" which also celebrate August 15; however, for Ilhabela specific sources only mention the relationship with the Assumption, without detailing a broader own calendar.
The temple is an important local pilgrimage placeespecially during the patron's holidays, when the faithful of the island and the continent participate in mass, processions and festive events. The testimonies of visitors highlight the atmosphere collected from the interior, the care of the building and its strong link with the identity of Ilhabela. The devotion is very marked by the relationship with the sea: sailors, fishermen and port workers come to entrust their travel and work to Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda, asking for protection from ocean storms and dangers. There are no official statistical data of inflow, but the temple is constantly among the main places visited in the city, indicating a significant devotional preset.
Link to the Rosary
The sources consulted on the Church / Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda e Bom Sucesso in Ilhabela do not explicitly mention a fellowship of the Rosary, specific campaigns of dissemination of the Rosary, or self-manifestations such as "Rosario of the Sailors" or other similar practices. The available materials do not contain a special form of this advocation to the prayer of the Rosary.
However, in Catholic spirituality, every legitimate Marian devotion is naturally integrated into the school of the Rosarywhich is contemplation of the mysteries of Christ with Mary. In a context like Ilhabela - with strong maritime tradition and confidence in the intercession of the Virgin - the Rosary is presented in a special way as plea and protectionwhich accompanies the departure to the sea, the difficult journeys and the daily life of the families of fishermen and sailors. Prayed to the image of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda, the Rosary helps to contemplate Mary as Mother who "helps" and leads to "good success"that is, to salvation in Christ, beyond material and spiritual dangers.
