Main data

Place: Andechs (Bavaria, Germany)

Origin and history

The Benedictine monastery of Andechs, known as the Monte Sagrado (Sacred Mountain), rises on a hill in Andechs, in the Alta Bavaria (Germany), and is one of the oldest and most famous pilgrimage shrines in the region. Marian devotion is part of a wider set of veneration, linked from the Middle Ages to important relics of the Passion and of saints preserved in the monastery.

According to the traditionsince the 12th-13th century the place was the center of veneration for the relics gathered by the Andechs-Merania conds, considered in its time among the most influential nobility families of the Holy Empire. The fame of these relics soon attracted many pilgrims to the "Sacred Mount," and together with this devotional flow was also strengthened the dedicated resource to the intercession of the Virgin Mary, represented in various images and altars of the sanctuary.

As for the documented historythe Benedictine monastery of Andechs, in its present form, was consolidated in the 15th century, especially from 1438, when the relics were rediscovered and organized pilgrimages began. The monastic-sanctuary complex has been amplified and reformed, especially in Baroque times, but has maintained its character as a Marian pilgrimage and relics centre, currently under the Archdiocese of Munich and Frisinga.

(They do not contain, in easily accessible sources, precise and agreed details about a story of apparition or of a strictly Marian foundational miracle linked to a single "image of Our Lady of Andechs"; devotion is more integrated into the whole of the sanctuary and its relics.)

The image and the sanctuary

The sources consulted on Andechs highlight above all the character of the place as pilgrimage sanctuary with relics and as a Benedictine monastery, but do not provide a detailed, secure and specific description of a single image entitled "Our Lady of Andechs" (type, material, dimensions, author). It is likely to be a Marian image of traditional Bavarian style (Virgin with the Child, in polychrome wood or baroque sculpture), integrated into one of the altars of the temple, but does not have sufficient documentary certainty in the revised sources.

The sanctuary is mainly identified as Monastery of Andechs (Monastery of Andechs), located in the municipality of Andechs, Alta Bavaria. The monastery church, of remarkable style baroque / rococo, is the center of the cult and pilgrimage complex. It is not known, in the ordinary sources consulted, that this church has been erected as minor basilica nor as a "national sanctuary"; it is rather a great sanctuary. regional/diocesano of Bavaria, very frequented by pilgrims.

The monastic set includes the church of pilgrimage, dependencies of the Benedictine community, and is also known - on the cultural level - for its historical monastic brewery, which highlights the insertion of the sanctuary into the Bavarian religious and popular tradition.

Sponsorship and coronation

The sources speak of Andechs as one of the main pilgrimage places of Bavariabut do not mention specific canonical patronage of the Marian advocation of Andechs over a city, diocese or region (unlike, for example, Altötting for Bavaria). In practice, the Virgin venerated in Andechs is a Marian regional representative, deeply rooted in the mercy of the Bavarian faithful, does not contain a formal decree of canonical patronage a nivel diocesan or nacional.

As for the canonical coronation of a concrete image under the title of "Our Lady of Andechs," in the sources consulted (pages on Marian shrines in Germany, articles of synthesis and devotional resources) does not contain a documented canonical coronation given by the Holy See or by pontifical delegation.

Party and devotion

The monastery of Andechs maintains an intense liturgical and pilgrimage calendar, in which Marian devotion is integrated, but the general sources do not clearly point to a unique date, universally recognized, as the specific "main feast" of Our Lady of Andechs. There is, therefore, no Marian liturgical memory of this advocation beyond the common Marian festivities of the calendar (such as the Assumption or the Nativity of the Virgin), which are celebrated with particular solemnity in the sanctuary.

It is documented that Andechs is one of the most visited pilgrimage sanctuaries of Bavaria, comparable - although less - to other large centres such as Altötting and Kevelaer. The pilgrimages take place throughout the year, with special intensity in the strong times (Easter, Pentecost, great Marian solemnities) and in certain traditional romaneries that ascend to the "Sacred Mount" from the surrounding localities. Devotion combines:

The sources generally point out that the great Marian shrines of Germany have received hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in Jubilee years and moments of special Marian impulse. In the specific case of Andechs, it is mentioned among the significant pilgrimage places of Bavaria, although without providing precise contemporary figures of influx.

Link to the Rosary

In the documentation consulted on the Monastery-shrine of Andechs there is no explicit and constant reference that links this advocation to a Founding of the Rosary, a historical fellowship of the Rosary of special relevance, or a unique practice that distinguishes it from other Marian shrines. Therefore, there is no specific and documented relationship between "Our Lady of Andechs" and the prayer of the Rosary, beyond the usual presence of this prayer in any great Marian sanctuary.

From a general Marian perspective, the Rosary is naturally integrated into Andechs' devotion as contemplative fireplace to meditate on the mysteries of Christ in the company of the Virgin. Where the Virgin is honored - as in the "Sacred Mount" of Andechs - the Rosary becomes a privileged instrument for:

– unir la outer pilgrimage (ascending to the sanctuary) with a inner pilgrimage del corazón; – contemplar, con María, los misterios de la Redención que también se evocan en las reliquias veneradas en el monasterio; – interceder por la Iglesia y por el pueblo de Baviera, en comunión con la tradición orante de los monjes benedictinos.

In this sense, although there is a lack of precise data on a particular "co-fradia of the Rosary of Andechs" or similar, the advocation of Our Lady of Andechs can be welcomed by the faithful as companion in the prayer of the Rosaryhelping to contemplate the life of Christ from the Marian heart that is venerated in the sanctuary.

A flower for the Virgin

It offers a simple prayer to this advocation. Pray a Hail Mary for Germany and for the peace of the world.

Pray Hail Mary
