Main data
Origin and history
La advocación de Our Lady of Aránzazu in Victoria (province of Entre Ríos, Argentina) comes from the historic Basque devotion to the Virgin of Aránzazu, originating in the shrine of Arantzazu (Oñate, Gipuzkoa, Spain). According to the Basque tradition, the image was found in the 15th century by a pastor named Rodrigo de Balzategui over a thorn in the Aloña saw, and since then was the object of great popular veneration. This devotion was spread among the Basque emigrants, who took it to various parts of America, including the city of Victoria.
In the case of Victoria, the available documentation indicates that its origin is linked to the presence of Basque settlers and to the construction of an oratory to the Virgin of Aránzazu. In a historical synthesis published by the shrine of Torreciudad (Huesca, Spain), it is mentioned that the city of Victoria "is the foundation of an Oratory, on May 13, 1810, which venerates the Virgin of Aránzazu." This reference confirms the early introduction of the advocation in the town and its foundational importance, although it does not detail the subsequent process of parish organization or the exact date on which it was proclaimed as the patron of the city.
– Documented history (in Victoria): existence of an oratory dedicated to Our Lady of Aránzazu in Victoria since 1810, linked to Basque settlers and considered a starting point for the development of the city. There is no account in the sources consulted of specific foundational apparitions or miracles in Victoria.
No sources were found to prove that Victoria's advocation is placed in "department of Entre Ríos, Colombia"; it corresponds to the Victoria City, Victoria Department, Entre Ríos Province, Argentinaso the reference to Colombia does not consist of reliable sources and appears to be a geographical error.
The image and the sanctuary
The sources consulted about Victoria are very spooky in the material description of the image local of Our Lady of Aránzazu. The type of size (wood, plaster or other material), dimensions or author, or a documented iconography for Victoria's image is not clear. By analogy with the original Basque image (a Virgin with the Child in arms, of small proportions), a similar model could be assumed, but that association would be only conjectural and therefore cannot be presented as historical data. In the absence of an official description, no consta with safety the type, material or specific iconographic details of the venerated image in Victoria.
As regards templeIt is known that the first focus of devotion was a prayer dedicated to the Virgin of Aránzazu, built in 1810. This oratorio gave rise to the subsequent urban and ecclesial development. The city venerates Our Lady of Aránzazu in its main temple, whose official name and current canon status (parish, diocesan sanctuary or minor basilica) are not accurately recorded in the sources consulted. The consultation of diocesan and municipal sources available online (including an overview of the municipality of Victoria on social networks) confirms the status of patron of the city, but does not mention the title of minor basilica ni la declaración como santuario nacional. – No consta que tenga reconocimiento como National sanctuary; can in fact be considered a sanctuary of local or diocesan devotion, but without official title found in the sources.
Sponsorship and coronation
The municipal sources of Victoria explicitly point out that Our Lady of Aránzazu is the patron of the city. – No consta a diocesan or nacional patronazgo.
Party and devotion
In Victoria, the Municipality and the local community celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Aránzazu as the city's patron party. According to an overview published by the municipality, "every 8 September we celebrate the Day of Our Patron [...] Our Lady of Aránzazu." This data places the local employers' party on September 8, a day of special civic and religious relevance.
It is important to distinguish this local date from the feast of the Virgin of Aránzazu in the Basque Country, which the sources place in the 9 Septemberin the framework of the proclamation as the principal patron of Guipúzcoa. In Victoria, however, the date officially held and communicated is the September 8.
They do not contain, in the sources consulted, precise data on the annual influx of pilgrims, the number of participants in the employers' parties, or detailed descriptions of processions, novenas or local promises. It is reasonable to think that the feast includes the solemn Eucharist, liturgical acts, procession with the image and civic activities, as is the case in other locations with Marian patronings, but, in the absence of specific documentary confirmation for Victoria, these aspects cannot be strictly detailed. Therefore, no constan figures or detailed official descriptions of the city's specific pilgrimages or traditions of piety.
Link to the Rosary
The sources consulted on the devotion to Our Lady of Aránzazu in Victoria do not contain explicit references to a particular practice of Rosary linked to this advocation (Rosary co-fradies, own solemn rosaries, specific promises, etc.). Therefore, no consta a specific documented link between Victoria's image and a unique form of the Rosary prayer.
– Vincular la devoción local (Nuestra Señora de Aránzazu patrona de Victoria) con la universality of the faith of the Church, for the Rosary is a Marian prayer prac
