La actual Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (sometimes also identified as the Catholic Cathedral of Asmara) is a Catholic temple of style Neorromanic / Romanesic Lombard, built by the Italian colonial authorities in the center of Asmara in the 1920s and finished 1923. This church was built to serve as the main Catholic church of the city during the Italian colonial period, in a context of strong implementation of the Latin rite next to the old local Christianity of tradition ge'ez, then joined to the Coptic Church and today to the Eritrean Orthodox Church.
Throughout the 20th century, the church has been the main focus of the Latin Catholic presence in the capital and is linked to the history of the Catholic Church in Eritreawhich today has the Iglesia católica eritrea de rito ge'ez as the Eastern Church sui iuris, in communion with Rome, along with the Latin rite community. Various resources of travelers and local testimonies point out that this church is "in fact the Catholic Cathedral of Asmara" and that many spiritual memories of the faithful are linked to it. The sources consulted, however, do not detail exact dates of canonical erection such as cathedral or specific pontifical documents related to the advocation of the Rosary.
# # Tradition and Marian context (without known legend)
In the public and ecclesial sources accessible there is no specific foundational legend (apparitions, miraculous findings of an image, etc.) typical of "Our Lady of the Rosary of Asmara." It is not associated with a local Marian account comparable to other claims of the Rosary in the world (such as Lepanto or Pompeya). Therefore, all that can be said with certainty is that the advocation is born of Marian title of the temple within the universal tradition of the Rosary and develops within the framework of intense devotion to Mary in Eritrea, under the name of Maryam, deeply venerated in both the Catholic Church and the Eritrean Orthodox.
The image and the sanctuary
The sources consulted describe in detail the templebut they do not provide accurate and documented information about a imagen concrete principal (type of Marian sculpture or icon, author, material) under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary within the church. It does not, therefore, contain in verifiable sources a specific iconographic description of the titular Marian image; the most likely, by analogy with other Italian temples of the time, is that it is a representation of the Virgin with the Child and the Rosary, but this data cannot be affirmed as documented.
As regards sanctuary / temple:
– El edificio es conocido como Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (sometimes simply "the cathedral"), a great temple Catholic situado en pleno centro de Asmara. – No consta, en las fuentes consultadas, una declaración formal de minor basilica o de National sanctuary given by the Holy See; no explicit documentation of its current canonical rank (cathedral / cathedral) has been found in the structure of the Eritrean Catholic Church. For this reason, in respect of more precise honorary or canonical titles, only: no consta.
Sponsorship and coronation
No official decree proclaiming a Our Lady of the Rosary of Asmara as patron of the city, of the diocese, or of Eritrea at national level. There are strong affective and devotional links between the Catholic population and the Church of the Rosary, but no mention has been found of a formal canonical patronage: therefore, no officially declared patronage.
About a possible canonical coronation from the image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Asmara (either by the Pope or by pontifical delegate), the sources consulted - including tourist, devotional and general information about the church - do not provide any reliable data or specific date. It should therefore be strictly stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
The precise indication of a local own party of "Our Lady of the Rosary of Asmara" other than the universal memory of the Our Lady of the Rosarywhich in the Roman calendar is celebrated 7 October. Since it is the main Catholic church of the city and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, it is reasonable to assume that October 7 has local liturgical relevance; but, in the absence of documentary confirmation, it can only be said that this is the general date of the Rosary's feast in the Latin Church, while for the specific advocation of Asmara does not officially contain another own date.
The Marian devotion in Asmara is in a broad context:
– Eritrea es un país de mayoría cristiana (en buena parte ortodoxa), donde la devotion to Maryam (Mary) es muy intensa, con numerosos días de fiesta mariana a lo largo del año en el calendario ge’ez. – Esta sensibilidad mariana se refleja también en la comunidad católica, tanto de rito latino como de rito ge’ez, que acude a las iglesias principales de la capital, entre ellas la de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, para las grandes solemnidades marianas y celebraciones litúrgicas.
The sources of travel and personal testimonies indicate that the church of the Rosary is very close to the spiritual life of the faithful and that many remember it as a place of Sunday masses, sacraments and community meetingsbut they do not provide inflow figures, nor do they describe organized pilgrimages that are comparable to large international sanctuaries. So, you can talk about a stable and rooted devotion at the local level, rather than a large international pilgrimage centre.
Link to the Rosary
The information available does not describe a specific practice (for example, rosary romaneries, rosary cofradies or particular campaigns of public rosaries) documented under the name "Our Lady of the Rosary of Asmara." There are also no specific pastoral programs that explicitly focus on the prayer of the Rosary in this temple. Therefore, with regard to local apvocation, it should be clearly stated: does not contain a tradition of the Rosary specially documented for this sanctuary.
However, the fact that the temple is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary places this church within the great current of Marian spirituality that promotes, in the Catholic Church, the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ with Mary. In a context such as that of Eritrea - markedly Marian in both Catholic and Orthodox tradition - the Rosary can play a spiritual bridge role:
– Para los católicos de Asmara, el rezo del Rosario, aun cuand
