Origin and history

The image and the sanctuary

The image is venerated in the Basilica of Our Lady of Atocha in Madrid, run by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), within the Archdiocese of Madrid. The devotion is linked to the mothers of soldiers and to those traveling to or leaving Madrid, who would come to ask for protection, leaving votive offerings. Chronicles from the Habsburg and Bourbon periods mention royal visits before important campaigns, emphasizing her role as "Virgin of the Court." Another widespread devotional aspect is her connection to prisoners, for whose release or recovery their families would pray.

Sponsorship and coronation

She is traditionally considered the patron saint of the court and the royal house in the Modern Age; several Spanish monarchs had a special devotion to this image. The canonical coronation is usually placed in 1951 according to the bibliography and chronicles of the basilica; the Dominicans present it as having been canonically crowned in the 20th century, although the exact date of the event may vary in popular accounts.

Party and devotion

The main feast day is celebrated on the first Sunday of October, according to various devotional and institutional sources. Some parish calendars also commemorate September 8th (the Nativity of the Virgin Mary) as a special day, but the official feast day for this particular devotion is the first Sunday of October.

Link to the Rosary

The basilica is entrusted to the Dominicans, historical promoters of the Rosary, and the communal recitation of the Rosary before the Virgin of Atocha is frequent, as is the existence of Marian confraternities of a Rosary nature within the Dominican community of Madrid. However, there is no record of the devotion being called "Our Lady of the Rosary of Atocha," nor of a decree officially linking it to the Rosary; out of prudence, there is no record of a specific legal link or title, although the Rosary practice is very intense due to the Dominican charism.
