Origin and history

About Our Lady of Bač (Básfa- Boldogasszone) the information available in Spanish is very limited; much of the known data comes from the local Hungarian and Slovak tradition, preserved in parish and Franciscan fields, but no diocesan or academic sources are easily found available online in Spanish. It is not mentioned in the main Spanish articles on Marian shrines of Slovakia or in recent news on Marian devotions approved by the Holy See, which refer to other places (such as Litmanová, on Mount Zvir).

According to the tradition / legend, in the Franciscan shrine of Báč, on the island of Žitný ostrov (southern Slovakia), a miraculous Marian image was venerated that would have spilled blood tears in 1715, a fact that attracted an intense influx of Slovak and Hungarian pilgrims over the centuries. This tradition presents the place as one of the oldest Marian centers in the region, linked to the Franciscan presence and the popular piety of Central Europe. However, critical documentary sources have not been located in Spanish (canonical acts, detailed historical studies, diocesan decrees), which allow for the precise context, witnesses, the type of ecclesial recognition or the canonical consequences of this alleged prodigy to be clearly specified. Therefore, the data of blood tears should be cited as an element of the traditional piety, in the way historically committed hecho.

As for the documented history, the only accessible references in our language place Báč as the current town Department of Western Slovakiain the Žitný ostrov region, with a Franciscan Marian Shrine which has been a pilgrimage point for the Slovak and Hungarian-speaking faithful. In the sources consulted in Spanish there is no precise chronology of the foundation of the sanctuary, of the stages of its development, or of any restorations or notable interventions. Also, in these sources, explicit references have not been found to recent recognition by the Holy See or to specific diocesan statements about this sanctuary, unlike other Marian places in the country, such as Litmanová, which have been the subject of documents from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. For all this, the history of Our Lady of Bač, as can be presented in Spanish, must be kept on a prudent plane: its importance can be pointed out as Marian shrine of Franciscan tradition in southern Slovakiabut without certain attribution of data that are not documented in available sources.

The image and the sanctuary

The Spanish sources do not provide a detailed and secure description of the typology, material and iconography of the image of Our Lady of Bač. It is not clear whether it is a Oil on canvas, board, wood carving or other supportor if the iconography responds to a concrete model (Dolorosa, Immaculate, Virgin with the Child, etc.). No firm data on the artistic style (Gothic, Baroque, etc.) have been found in the sources consulted in Spanish. In view of this lack of verifiable information, it is not possible to describe the image without falling into conjecturesand should therefore be recorded: does not contain a documented iconographic description in the sources available in Spanish.

As regards sanctuary, it is known that it is a Franciscan Marian Shrine situado en Báčin the area of Rye Island (southern Slovakia), which has been a pilgrimage centre for the faithful of Slovak and Hungarian origin. However, no precise data on the full official name of the templeor on its canonical rank (parish, conventual church, diocesan sanctuary, etc.), or on whether it has honorary titles such as minor basilica o National sanctuary; in the sources consulted, these extremes not indicatedand is therefore obliged to state that it is not officially recorded in the Spanish sources that the temple has been raised to the lower basilica or that it is declared a national sanctuary. There is also no precise architectural description (style, dimensions, main works of art, reforms) in Spanish, so that it can only be said with caution that this is a Marian cult place of long Franciscan tradition in the region.

Sponsorship and coronation

The sources accessible in Spanish do not indicate that Our Lady of Báč has been proclaimed official employer of a city, municipality, diocese or Slovakia at national level. As a result, the patronazgoIt can only be said that it is a important reference of Marian devotion for the Slovak and Hungarian faithful who pilgrim to Báčbut no consta there is a explicit canonical decree to declare her the principal patron of a specific ecclesiastical jurisdiction.

En lo relativo a la canonical coronation, Marian sources in Spanish often fairly accurately collect the solemn coronations granted by the Holy See or held by pontifical delegates, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, as is seen, for example, in well-documented cases of other shrines in the region. In case of Our Lady of Bač, no if found documented reference en castellano a una canonical coronation (with decree of the Holy See and official celebration), neither to a diocesan coronation with pontifical authorization. Therefore, according to the information available, it must be clearly stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Báč in the sources currently accessible in Spanish.

Party and devotion

Las Main party dates from different Marian advocates of Central Europe are often well documented in liturgical calendars and holy pages, especially when it comes to diocesan or national patronings. In the case of Our Lady of Bač, available sources in Spanish do not indicate a specific liturgical date associated with this advocation. It is not, therefore, with certainty whether the main feast is held on a date of its own or whether it is integrated into a general Marian solemnity (for example, the Nativity of the Virgin, the Assumption or the Immaculate Conception). It should therefore be stated that: the precise date of Our Lady of Báč's main feast is not recorded in the sources consulted in Spanish.

It is generally understood, however, that the place is considered a important pilgrimage destination for Slovaks and Hungarianswith an entrenched tradition of visits to the sanctuary and veneration of its miraculous image. The reference to the isla de Žitný island As a geographical area, this character of meeting cultures and languages in the same Marian centre is highlighted. However, the sources consulted do not provide flow figuresor specific details on the schedule of pilgrimages (annual holidays, novies, processions) or on specific devotional customs (promises, vows, processions with the image, etc.). It is therefore only with caution that there is a stable and long-standing devotionwith pilgrims from both Slovakia and Hungary, while the finest details of that popular piety no constan available in Spanish.

Link to the Rosary

The current sources in Spanish about Our Lady of Bač do not explicitly mention una particular or historical relationship with the prayer of the Rosary (for example, Rosary cofradies, specific indulgences, Rosary campaigns associated with the sanctuary, etc.). No reference has been found to a formal rosarian advocation or to specific festivities of the Rosary directly linked to this sanctuary.
