Origin and history
La of Our Lady of Salvation is linked to the Syrian-Catholic Cathedral in Baghdadthe seat of the archbishop of the Syrian-Catholic Church in Iraq, located in the district of Karrada, in the Iraqi capital. It is a temple of Eastern Catholic (Syrian-Catholic) rite in full communion with Rome, which has become a world symbol of the suffering and fidelity of Iraqi Christians.
As regards historical origin of the apvocation in Baghdadthe accessible sources focus almost exclusively on recent events (especially the 2010 attack and the visit of Pope Francis in 2021) and no consta in the documentation available the exact date of foundation of the temple and the moment when the parish / cathedral adopted the title "Our Lady of Salvation." Nor is there a specific foundational tradition or legend linked to a Marian apparition or miraculous fact originating in this place recorded in the consulted sources; the advocation seems to be inserted into the Eastern Marian piety, which invokes Mary as the protection and salvation of the people, without a documented legendary account.
La recent documented history of the cathedral is marked by the of 31 October 2010, when militants linked to Al Qaeda broke into the Sunday Mass, they took hostages and killed dozens of faithful and two priests. The figures vary according to the sources (talk about 48 martyres in Catholic media and in the cause of canonization, and 53 dead in other international press reports), but agrees to point it out as the most serious attack on Christians in Iraq to date. This event definitely transformed the spiritual meaning of the place, which Pope Francis described as a cathedral "blessed by the blood of our brothers and sisters" during his visit to the 5 March 2021.
The image and the sanctuary
The available sources refer to this place mainly as "Syrian-Catholic Cathedral (or Church) of Our Lady of Salvation" in Baghdad. It is the cathedral of the Syrian-Catholic Church in the city, used for great celebrations, meetings of bishops, religious and faithful of eastern rite, and was the scene of Pope Francis's meeting with bishops, priests, religious, consecrated and catechists during his apostolic journey to Iraq. As a cathedral, it is the main temple of the corresponding Syrian-Catholic ecclesiastical constituency; it is not recorded in the consulted sources that have the title of minor basilica nor express recognition as National sanctuaryand so it must be said simply that it is a cathedral / reference sanctuary for Christians in Iraq and the place of memory of the martyrs.
With regard to the concrete image of Our Lady of Salvation venerated in this temple, the written sources consulted (Vatican releases, journalistic chronicles and devotional notes) do not describe in detail the type of image, material or iconography (for example, if it is an oriental painted icon, a relief, a wood sculpture or other material). In Syrian-Catholic contexts the presence of Marian icons according to the Eastern tradition, with Mary represented as Mother of God and Protector of the people, but, in the absence of an explicit description in the documents consulted, no consta with rigor how exactly is the image entitled "Our Lady of Salvation" in this cathedral.
What is clear in the sources is that the own temple, marked by the impact of the 2010 attack, has acquired a martyrdom sanctuary: a place where the memory and intercession of those who died by faith, entrusted to the Virgin, are preserved. Pope Francis, speaking there to the Christian community, stressed that this building "carries the signs of the suffering of the Iraqis" and has become a sign of hope and perseverance.
Sponsorship and coronation
In the documentation consulted, the advocation of Our Lady of Salvation aparece mainly como holder of the Syrian-Catholic Cathedral in Baghdadwhich acts as a spiritual reference for the faithful of this rite in the capital and throughout Iraq. There is no evidence of a decreto formal to declare it explicitly official patron of the city of Baghdad, the State of Iraq or a specific diocese; rather, its influence and veneration are de facto extended among local Christians as Mother and Protector of the persecuted community, inextricably associated with the martyrs of 2010.
As for a canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Salvation in Baghdad, neither the chronicles of the attack, nor the coverage of the papal journey, nor the revised Catholic press notes mention an act of canonical coronation (neither by delegation of the Holy See nor by direct pontifical decree). Therefore, with due rigour it must be stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
The open sources consulted do not indicate a own and specific liturgical date for the feast of "Our Lady of Salvation" in Baghdad; no consta an official day of particular celebration of the advocation in the local calendar cited in the revised documents. In contrast, significant celebrations related to the memory of the martyrs of October 31, 2010especially commemorative masses and acts of prayer on the anniversary of the attack and on other specified dates. The cathedral is also the usual place to celebrate Christmas and other liturgical solemnities for the Christian community in Baghdad, even in a context of insecurity.
After the attack, the 40 days of the killingThe Christians of Iraq reunited in the cathedral to pray and celebrate the liturgy, thus witnessing a persevering devotion and the will to continue to live the faith in their own country. Different testimonies describe local pilgrimages: communities that visit several churches in Baghdad and conclude precisely in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Salvation, as a gesture of reparation, intercession and hope. The numerous assistance of faithful in the events with Pope Francis in 2021, despite the difficulties, confirms the character of spiritual reference centre of this church for the Iraqi Christians.
La self-devotion which is derived from these sources is marked by several features:
– Memoria agradecida de los mártires de 2010, cuya causa de canonización se halla en estudio en la Santa Sede. – Confianza en María como Salvation and Protection del pueblo cristiano frente a la violencia y la persecución. – Oración perseverante por la peace in Iraqthe reconciliation and return of those who have been forced to emigrate.
