Origin and history

La Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra (Mount Mary Basilica) is a Marian Latin rite sanctuary located in the Bandra district of Mumbai (former Bombay), Maharashtra State, India. The devotion focuses on an ancient image of the Virgin Mary with the Child, traditionally linked to the Portuguese Jesuit missionaries who arrived in the area in the 16th-17th centuries.

From the perspective of the documented historythe current church dates from the early 20th century, when it was rebuilt on a hill overlooking the Arabian Sea, on Mount Mary Road, Bandra. It is officially recognized as minor basilica of the Catholic Church. The Catholic presence in Bombay dates back to the period of Portuguese and later British rule, in a context of strong missionary activity on the western coast of India.

As for the tradition / legendthe memory of a Marian image of the 16th century that would have been brought by the Portuguese and related to the work of the Jesuits in the region of Bandra is venerated. Some devotional versions speak of a lost or damaged image and later replaced or restored, but these stories are not sufficiently corroborated by critical sources, so the specific details are considered traditional and do not record as historically verified.

The image and the sanctuary

The advocation focuses on an image of Our Lady of the Mount who represents the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in her arms. It is a Western classic image (Madonna with the Child), adapted to the local context, entroned in the main altar of the basilica. The sources consulted do not safely detail the original material (wood, stone or other), so no consta precisely the type of material and the author of the work.

The temple is officially known as Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra (Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra). It is located on a hill that dominates the Arabian Sea, in the suburb of Bandra, and is one of the most visited churches in Mumbai. The building presents the typology of a church of late neo-Gothic / colonial style (according to the architectural practice of the time of its reconstruction), with a wide ship, side altars and an environment of grotto and devotional spaces open to the public. Next to the basilica is a gruta marijuana much frequented by the faithful. The church has the title of minor basilica, granted by the Holy See.

Sponsorship and coronation

Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra, is considered one of the main Marian Patrons of the City of Mumbai, and the basilica is a spiritual point of reference not only for the Catholics of the archdiocese of Bombay, but for the faithful of the whole region of Maharashtra. The sources consulted do not mention a specific decree of diocesan or national canonical patronage, so beyond its notoriety as a sanctuary of the city, no consta a formal appointment as the principal patron of the diocese or of the nation.

As for the canonical coronationThe pope. Pius XII concedió el pontifical coronation decree to the venerated image the 21 October 1954signed and notarized by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini (then Secretary of the Holy Congregation of Rites, future Paul VI). The image of the Virgin and the Child was solemnly 5 December 1954 por el cardenal Thank you., Archbishop of Bombay. It is therefore an image officially crowned according to the liturgical norms of the Church.

Party and devotion

The main feast of Our Lady of the Mount is held around the September 8, coinciding with the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which is the central date of the famous Bandra Fair (Bandra Fair). This fair, of a week or more, takes place every September and attracts crowds of all religions from Mumbai and from other parts of India, who come to the basilica and to the festive places and activities that are organized in the surroundings.

Devotion is characterized by a great inflow of pilgrimsespecially during the fair: it is one of the most important Marian shrines in the country and the city of Mumbai itself. They come not only Catholics, but also Hindus, Muslims and people from other faiths, who come to ask for the intercession of the Virgin, light candles, offer flowers or exvotes, and participate in masses and novies. The Basilica is perceived as a place of peace, maternal protection and reconciliationand has become a symbol of religious coexistence in the city.

Link to the Rosary

The available sources on the shrine of Mount Mary, Bandra do not point to a specific historical or charismatic link between this advocation and a form of prayer of the Rosary, beyond common Marian prayer in the Church. It does not include, for example, a fellowship of the Rosary or a particular tradition of mysteries or litany that are exclusively linked to this sanctuary.

However, as in most of the great Marian shrines of Latin rite, the Rosary It is part of the ordinary devotional practice of the faithful: many pilgrims pray before or after the Mass, during the novies prior to the September feast or as intercession for the family, health and work. In this context, the Rosary is understood as a way to to meditate on the mysteries of Christ's life from the hand of Maryand allows the devotees of Our Lady of the Mount to unite their own history - often marked by the coexistence of religions, migration and the challenges of the great city - to the journey of faith of Mary, which always leads to Christ, the center of all authentic Marian piety.

Documented extension: chronology of the Bandra Basilica

The historical page of its own Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount publishes a more precise chronology of the headquarters. According to this institutional source, in 1570 there was a simple oratorio attended in the context of the Jesuit mission of Bandra and in 1640 the oratorio was extended to chapel for a growing community and for the Portuguese garrison of Lands End. The same chronology in 1761 places a reconstruction of the chapel and points out that the present temple, the fourth building, was completed in 1904. These milestones are cited as the institutional history of the sanctuary; they do not become dates of a Marian apparition, because there is no ecclesial judgment here about a local apparition.

The story published by the Basilica also recalls that the growth of communications and of the road to Mount Mary favored the arrival of pilgrims in the 19th century. The current building and the devotion of Bandra must therefore be read together: the pastoral continuity of a Catholic church, the preservation of a Marian image and the pilgrimage of the city are made of a different nature, even if they are part of the same religious history.

The image, tradition and the title of basilica

The institutional chronology conserves a story according to which a statue had been taken from Portugal by the Jesuits and, during an attack of 1700, had suffered damage; the narrative adds that a swarm of bees had forced to withdraw the attackers. In this document it is presented as a tradition transmitted by the sanctuary. There is no independent historical source to raise every detail of the episode to a proven fact, nor is it said that the story is a recognized miracle.

The same official source indicates that in 1954 the images of Our Lady of the Mount and the Child Jesus were crowned with gold crowns and that the church received the title of a minor basilica on that day by decision of Pius XII. Coronation and the basic title are ecclesial acts concerning the image and the temple; they do not amount to an approval of apparitions, private revelations or extraordinary healing. On the latter ends, the sources consulted for this lot do not contain a specific pronunciation.

Devoción de Bandra

The basilica continues to be a place of prayer and pilgrimage in Mumbai. The September feast is linked to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the institutional source documents the importance of the arrival of the faithful in the sanctuary. In a Catholic prayer, Mary can be asked to intercede before God for the sick, the families and the city, always distinguishing Marian veneration from worship, which is only for God.

Additional sources and location limits

The chronology comes from the official historical page of the basilica. To check the mapping environment without replacing the M1 task, the OSM geometry of Mount Mary Road (way 1415665101), whose average position is located next to the sanctuary, was consulted. The file retains its existing cartographic metadata: this check does not change coordinates, map, place or source of the page.
