From the beginning there was ecclesial research: a diocesan process was opened between 1935 and 1937, with an episcopal commission whose work was referred to the Holy See. In May 1942, the bishop Louis-Joseph Kerkhofsfrom Liège, announced approval of the apparitions. The Holy See subsequently granted preliminary approval at 1947 and the final approval was published in 1949, year from which devotion was officially recognized. Since then, the place has become International shrine and Marian pilgrimage point.
In terms of tradition and devotional elements, the memory of witnesses and pilgrims has been particularly emphasizing the phrase attributed to the Virgin: «I come to aliviar el sufrimiento»together with the promise of the source "for all nations" and for the sick. These contents come from the accounts of the seer and the subsequent catechesis, and have been integrated into the spirituality of Bannux as a call to trust, prayer and solidarity with the poor and those who suffer; it is a pious tradition based on testimonies, not dogmatic definitions.
The image and the sanctuary
La iconografía de Our Lady of Banneux is inspired by Mariette Beco's description: a woman dressed in whitewith blue twine and praying and welcoming attitude. In the sanctuary a statue of the Virgin of the Poor located on the source indicated in the apparitions, about 100 meters from the place of first vision. The image represents Mary standing, slightly inclined towards the pilgrims, an expression of closeness to the poor and sick. Various reproductions of this statue are spread in chapels and parishes of many countries.
The main place of worship is the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Banneux (Our Lady of Banneux o Our Lady of the Poor), recognized as Marian international sanctuary. In the garden of the Beco family, where the first apparition took place, a small chapel which remains the center of prayer for pilgrims. After World War II, the sanctuary was extended with a larger church, often called basilica in devotional literature, although the sources consulted do not specify with certainty the canon title of minor basilicaand therefore this name is not documented. The whole of the sanctuary includes the chapel of the apparitions, the explanade for international celebrations, the fountain with the statue of the Virgin, reception spaces for the sick and various chapels and buildings at the service of the pilgrimages.

The place and the eight apparitions
Bannux is located in the present town of Louveigné, Sprimont, in the Belgian province of Liège. The shrine of Bannux-Notre-Dame retains the chapel of the apparitions and the source associated with the memory of the place. The map has used the mapping point of the sanctuary source, identified by OpenStreetMap, with location accuracy; it is not presented as the exact point of each episode of the story.
The official source of the sanctuary places the beginning of the apparitions on 15 January 1933, before Mariette Beco, and lists eight dates: 15, 18, 19 and 20 January; 11, 15 and 20 February; and 2 March. At the last meeting, the message transmitted by Mariette is summarized in the identification of the Virgin as Mother of the Savior and Mother of God, along with the call to pray much. The fact sheet retains the account as a witness of the seer and as an ecclesial memory of the place, not as an independent observation made by those who did not see the apparition.
The fountain, the chapel and the pilgrimage
The chapel of the apparitions was built and opened in the summer of 1933. The source became a sign of welcome to the sick and pilgrims, and the sanctuary develops a pastoral of prayer and charity around the title "Virgin of the Poor." The tradition of the place is expressed in processions, rosaries, care for the sick and pilgrimages. The graces and cures attributed by the pilgrims do not become here a list of recognized miracles: each case requires its own ecclesial documentation.
Recognition of the Church
On August 22, 1949, the Bishop of Liège, Mgr Louis- Joseph Kerkhofs, unreservedly recognized the reality of the eight apparitions to Mariette Beco and his message, after the diocesan process that the shrine's website summarizes. The sanctuary itself recalls that previous recognitions of 1942 and 1947 had been formulated with reservations. This sequence explains why the date of 1949 is the date that is kept in the metadata and not the first date of the story.
Ecclesial State
