La tradition local reports several prodigious facts: among them, the finding of a small image of the Virgin with the Child by some pastoralists, and another episode in which a young woman rescued from the Gave River would have offered Mary a bouquet of gold in a sign of gratitude. The documented history places the sanctuary as a Marian center already established in the Modern Age; the present religious family linked to the place recognizes that Bétharram was the starting point of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Bétharram, founded by San Miguel Garicoïts in the 19th century.

The image and the sanctuary

The venerated image is a Marian Invocation with the Child Jesus, devotionally associated with the motif of the "beautiful bouquet"; in popular tradition it is described as the "Virgin" of the beautiful bouquet. The date of the party that appears in the sources consulted is the 28 July. Some devotional publications also mention the 22 April o el August 15but these references are not confirmed with the same strength in the sources of sanctuary and congregation provided; by rigour, the sure date to be set is 28 July.

Bétharram was for a long time a great Marian center of the southwestern Frenchprior to the expansion of Lourdes, and retained a strong pilgrim attraction linked to its basilica and to the monumental calvary. Popular devotion is expressed in the veneration to the Virgin of the "beautiful bouquet" and in the memory of the traditional miracles that explain her name and local roots.
