The image of the church surrounded by the lake and dominated at the bottom by the castle of Bled has become one of the most emblematic religious landscapes in the country.
Documented history. On the island there was a first Christian chapel already towards the 11th centuryaccording to local tradition and the basic historiography collected in guides and historical reviews of the place, which point to the presence of a very old place of worship. A Gothic church, documented around the 15th century, which was the core of the Marian medieval sanctuary on the island. The present church is fundamentally 17th century baroque, the result of a deep reconstruction on the previous temple, from which the architectural complex that is now contemplated is preserved. This Baroque church, located in the centre of the island, is described as the most emblematic picture of Lake Bled and one of the great religious and tourist icons of Slovenia.
Tradition and legend. Before Christianization, various local traditions point out that the island and the lake were considered a sacred place for the ancient Slavs, who would have veneration the Ziva, goddess of love and fertility, in a pagan sanctuary located in the area. This reference belongs to the legendary and mythological Slavic tradition, without direct Christian documentation, but it appears on a recurring basis in tourist and historical stories about Bled. The island is also linked to "mysterious powers to recover happiness," an expression of devotional and tourist folklore, without doctrinal character.
The image and the sanctuary

The temple features a unique baroque-decorated ship, altards and images in the style of the 17th century (the tourist guides describe it as a "baroque church of the 17th century" without specifying in detail each artistic element). It is not found in the consulted sources that the church has been elevated to the title of minor basilica formally declared National sanctuary, although it is mentioned as one of the most visited Marian shrines in the country.

In the interior is also preserved the famous "bell of desires", suspended bell in the presbytery to which pilgrims and visitors make sound as they raise a prayer or request to the Virgin. This bell has become one of the most well-known symbols of the sanctuary.
Sponsorship and coronation
The church of the Assumption of the island of Bled is one of the the main Marian shrines of Slovenia and a religious icon of the region of Upper Carniola, although the sources consulted present it more as an emblematic and nationally known sanctuary than as an exclusive canonical patron of a particular diocese. There is no formal proclamation of the Virgin of the Assumption of Bled as the main patron of the municipality, diocese or nation with a specific decree, beyond its strong devotional and symbolic arraigo.
As for the canonical coronationin the revised sources (descriptions of the sanctuary, official tourist information and historical material) does not contain a documented canonical coronation of the headline image of Our Lady of the Assumption of Bled, neither date nor pontiff or delegate is mentioned for such an act. As far as the sources consulted reach, it is not recorded that the image has been crowned with a pontifical decree.
Party and devotion
The advocation is liturgically linked to the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, el August 15which is also one of the main Marian parties of the Roman calendar and the day of Marian celebration very deeply rooted in Slovenia. However, the specific sources on the church on the island of Bled do not explicitly detail the programme of events or formally confirm that this is their main feast, although by the title of the temple and the Church's tradition the liturgical reference date is considered.
The sanctuary is the destination of many pilgrims and visitors throughout the year, and is among the most visited places in Slovenia. The island is accessed in traditional boats called “pletna”, which is part of the pilgrimage experience. Once on the island, the faithful rise the 99 steps towards the church and, in the interior, it is tradition to sound the bell of desires, an act that many make accompanied by a prayer to the Virgin asking for her intercession. This practice, although very popular, belongs to the field of popular piety and not to a strict liturgical rite.
Several reviews point out that Lake Bled and its island with the church of the Assumption make up one of the more photogenic and iconic religious landscapes in Europe, which significantly increases the flow of tourists, many of whom are also approaching in a spirit of prayer. There are no precise and official statistical data on the annual number of pilgrims in the sources consulted, nor a detailed description of specific diocesan pilgrimages to the sanctuary.

Nor is it mentioned that the Rosary is a particular identifier of this advocation, beyond the general Marian devotion of a temple dedicated to the Assumption.
However, since it is a Marian sanctuary dedicated to the glorification of the Virgin in her Assumption, the Rosary is naturally presented as a privileged way to accompany the visit and prayer: glorious mysteries, and in particular the fourth mystery (Mary's Assumption to heaven), allow you to contemplate the mystery that gives name to this church. The meditation of the Rosary, especially of the joyful and glorious mysteries, helps to unite the beauty of the creation that surrounds Lake Bled with the contemplation of Mary, already glorified, who accompanies and guides the faithful to Christ. Although this link is not contained in specific documents, it responds to the Marian spirituality of the Church and to the usual practice of many faithful who go to Marian shrines praying the Rosary.
