Our Lady of Bohosudov
Marian advocation of Bohosudov (Krupka) (Bohemia)
There is not much information about Our Lady of Bohosudov in Spanish, but the Czech and historical sources agree that it is a antigua imagen de la Piedad (Pietà) gótica, one of the most venerated in the north of Bohemia, linked to an important Jesuit sanctuary in the town of Bohosudov (now part of Krupka, region of Ustí nad Labem, north of Bohemia). In modern centuries the place has also been known by its German name, Marijuana (literally, "Resplandor de María"), very associated with the Marian pilgrimage of the area.
Main data
Origin and history
There is not much information about Our Lady of Bohosudov in Spanish, but the Czech and historical sources agree that it is a antigua imagen de la Piedad (Pietà) gótica, one of the most venerated in the north of Bohemia, linked to an important Jesuit sanctuary in the town of Bohosudov (now part of Krupka, region of Ustí nad Labem, north of Bohemia). In modern centuries the place has also been known by its German name, Marijuana (literally, "Resplandor de María"), very associated with the Marian pilgrimage of the area.
As for the remote origin of the image and of the cult, the literature available online is very fragmented and does not provide a clear traditional account (for example, apparition, miraculous finding or concrete votive promise): does not contain a well-defined and established tradition or legend that can be safely summarized as the origin of the sanctuary.
From the perspective of the documented historythe local historical sources (in Czech / German) highlight the development of the place as a Marian pilgrimage centre especially from the time of the Habsburg and, later, with the presence of the Jesuits, who promoted the sanctuary as a focus of Marian preaching and devotion in northern Bohemia. Due to the lack of accurate data and concords in accessible sources in Spanish, do not contain with certainty specific foundational dates or time-frames (as a year of initial construction, consecration, etc.) that can be offered without risk of inaccuracy.
The image and the sanctuary
La image of Our Lady of Bohosudov is described in the sources as a Gothic piety: that is, a sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding in her lap the dead body of Jesus Christ, immediately after the Crucifixion. It is a highly widespread iconographic type in late-medieval Central Europe. Specialized references point out that the image is considered one of the oldest and most venerated Pietà of Bohemia, Gothic style, but is not safe the material (polychrome wood or stone) in the documentation accessible in Spanish; it is not necessary for caution.
The sanctuary in which the image is venerated is a gran iglesia jesuítica, known today as Basilica of the Seven Dolores of the Virgin Mary in Bohosudov (in Czech, approximately "Bazilika Sedmitolestné Panny Marie v Bohosudově"), located in Bohosudov (Krupka), in northern Bohemia, Czech Republic. This is a important temple of pilgrimage of the region, with central European baroque architecture and a wide enclosure that, historically, was linked to the pastoral and missionary activity of the Society of Jesus.
Recent Czech sources indicate that the temple has the title of basilica (hence its usual name: basilica of the Seven Dolores), but in the resources consulted The decree and the date of granting the title of "minor basilica" by the Holy See are not explicitly recorded, so the data is kept in these prudent terms: it is known and named locally as basilica, and is one of the main Marian centers of the diocese, with no further details documented in Spanish.
Sponsorship and coronation
Our Lady of Bohosudov, venerated as Gothic Piety and under the title of the Seven Dolores of the Virgin, is an advocation with arraigo in the Northern Bohemia, particularly linked to the town of Bohosudov (Krupka) and its surroundings. It is recognized as patrona local and the object of special devotion of the faithful of the region; however, in the documentation consulted no specific formal appointment as the main patron of the city, municipality or diocese made by canonical decree that can be quoted with precision.
In relation to the canonical coronation of the image, the available Spanish and English sources do not provide clear reference to a solemn coronation recognized by a pontifical decree. Nor does the materials consulted in Czech accessible online show an unequivocal data, with a pontifical or delegated date and authority, similar to that of other well-documented Czech shrines.
Therefore, following the criterion of historical-ecclesial rigour: does not contain a documented canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Bohosudov.
Party and devotion
The sanctuary is dedicated to the Virgin of the Seven Dolores, a title very rooted in Central European spirituality and especially in lands of Slavic tradition. In the Czech Republic, as in Slovakia, the main Marian celebration linked to this title is often associated with the liturgical memory of Our Lady of the Dolores (September 15) or with local own parties; however, for Bohosudov is not certain, in the sources consulted, the exact date of the main party of the sanctuary (specific day of the great annual pilgrimage or other patron celebrations).
It is known, by comparison with other Czech Marian shrines and the designation of Bohosudov as an important pilgrimage center, that the place receives pilgrims from the Sudetes region and other areas of Bohemiaespecially around the great holidays of the Virgin. However, no reliable flow figures or detailed descriptions of specific popular processions or traditions are recorded (e.g. night processions, open-air viacruces or specific promises), which provide quantitative or customary data without risk of inaccuracy.
In practice, the sanctuary is inserted into the network of Marian places in Czech where devotion to the Virgin, particularly in her compassion at the foot of the cross (Seven Dolores), is lived as comfort in suffering, memory of the painful history of the region (wars, persecutions, expulsions) and space of reconciliation, similar to other contemporary Czech Marian shrines.
Link to the Rosary
No mention is made of a specific and documented relationship of Our Lady of Bohosudov with the prayer of the Rosary (for example, historical co-fradies of the Rosary, miracles specifically associated with the Rosary or particular indulgences linked to this practice). Therefore, there is no particular link of the sanctuary to the Rosary, beyond the general Marian devotion.
However, by the very nature of the advocation - a Gothic piety in a sanctuary of the Seven Dolores- the Rosary (and especially the Rosary of the Seven Dolores o las painful mysteries) offers a very appropriate spiritual framework to accompany this devotion. By contemplating Mary holding Christ dead, the faithful meditates on the mysteries of the Passion that the Rosary proposes:
– En los painful mysteries, se recorren los pasos de Jesús hacia la cruz, en comunión con el corazón traspasado de la Madre. – En la devotion of the Seven Doloresvery widespread in Centroeuropa, the moments of the greatest suffering of the Virgin are seen, which harmonizes with the iconography of Bohosudov and favors a Rosary lived as a school of compassion and reparation.
In this way, even if there is no record of a specific rosarian tradition linked to Bohosudov, the prayer of the Rosary It is presented today as a privileged way to join the Virgin of the Seven Dolores of Bohosudov, with her contemplating the mystery of redemption and offering her own life and crosses for the Church and the world.
