Marian devotion

Our Lady of Bonaria

Marian devotion of Cagliari (Sardinia)

According to the tradition in 1370 a ship from the area of the present Spain was surprised by a heavy storm in the Mediterranean. To lighten the ship, the sailors threw the cargo into the sea; one of the boxes, by touching the water, would have miraculously calmed the storm. The currents took that drawer to the beach at the foot of the hill of Bonaria, in Cagliari, where the merchant friars picked it up and, when they opened it, found a wood size of the Virgin with the Child Jesus and a candela in their hand. The subsequent spread of this devotion between sailors and sailors explains that its title is associated with "good air" or "good winds" and that, by influence of Spanish sailors, the name "Bonaria / Good Air" would pass to America, traditionally linked to the origin of the name of Buenos Aires.

As for the documented historythe oldest sanctuary was erected by the merchants on the hill of Bonaria in 1325, within the context of the Catalan-Aragonese presence in Sardinia. This first Gothic-Catalan temple is the original core of the current complex. The size today venerated in the sanctuary is made of wood and the studies date not in 1370, but in the second half of the 15th century, which places the historical image somewhat later than the date of the legend of the box at sea. Pope Pius X proclaimed Madonna di Bonaria the main patron of Sardinia on 13 September 1907. The major temple was raised to minor basilica por Pío XI en 1926.

There is no documented evidence, in ecclesiastical or academic sources, to confirm the existence of an official shrine to "Our Lady of Bonaria" in Cagliari (Sardinia) located in Colombia; this is likely a case of mistaken identity. There is no record of a distinct history in Colombia under this title.

The image and the sanctuary

The image of Our Lady of Bonaria is a wood size who represents the Sitting Virgin Mary, with the Child Jesus and a candela (candle) in her right hand, according to the iconography collected in tradition and in the description of the sanctuary. It is a sculpture of moderate dimensions, of late Gothic style, dating in the second half of the 15th century. The candle, a very characteristic element, symbolically highlights the light of Mary that guides in the midst of the storms of life and the special link with the navigators.

El Sanctuary of Our Lady of Bonaria is located on the hill of Bonaria, in the city of Cagliari, and is considered the main Marian temple of all Sardinia. The complex consists of a small Gothic-Catalan church of the 14th century (the ancient sanctuary, erected in 1325) and an adjacent larger temple, beginning in 1704 and ending in 1926, when it was declared Basílica Pontificia Menor by Pius XI. The basilica has a Latin cross plant with three ships, side chapels and octagonal dome; its limestone façade and the wide front staircase make it a landscape reference of Cagliari.

The sanctuary is attended by the merchant parentswho reside in the contiguous convent, and also perform parish functions for the neighborhood of Bonaria. The set also includes a museumwhere there are many exvotes offered to the Virgin, including more than 130 models of ships and other testimonies of the devotion of sailors and faithful of Sardinia.

Party and devotion

La main party of Our Lady of Bonaria is celebrated in Sardinia the 24 April, date indicated by the liturgical and devotional sources. Around this celebration are organized pilgrimages, solemn Eucharistic celebrations and popular manifestations of piety, both in Cagliari and in other places linked to devotion.

The sanctuary receives pilgrims from all over Sardinia, as well as from other parts of Italy and the world, especially those with ties to the sea. The presence of numerous maritime votive offerings (model ships, nautical artifacts, and mementos of shipwrecks averted) demonstrates a deep-rooted devotion among sailors, fishermen, and their families, who invoke Our Lady of Bonaria as their protector in storms. Throughout the 20th century, several popes visited the sanctuary, reinforcing its significance: Paul VI (April 24, 1970), John Paul II (October 20, 1985), and Benedict XVI (September 7, 2008); Pope Francis visited and consecrated Our Lady of Bonaria on September 23, 2013. These gestures have solidified the sanctuary's status as a Marian center with a reach extending far beyond the local area.

Detailed statistical data on annual influx is not available in the sources consulted, but the sanctuary is described as a destination for pilgrims "from all over the world", with a special concentration around the April festival and the Marian calendar.

Link to the Rosary

The historical and official sources about Our Lady of Bonaria do not point to a specific link or origin of this advocation with the prayer of the Rosary, as in other shrines explicitly "rosarians." For example, there is no historical fellowship of the Rosary that is particularly outstanding, linked to this image, nor apparitions related to the practice of the Rosary.

They allow Mary to be seen as a star of the sea, a guide to the glory of Christ.

Although there is no documented tradition that uniquely links this devotion to the Rosary, the prayer
