Origin and history

According to the tradition and legendthe Virgin Mary would have appeared in Budslaē to a group of believers in July 1588, and since then the Marian icon associated with this place would have acquired great fame for the numerous miracles attributed to its intercession. This tradition of Marian apparition is part of the devotional background that feeds popular piety around the sanctuary, although there is no contemporary historical documentation that confirms it in detail; the sources speak of it explicitly as legend.

As for the documented history, it is known that in 1530 the Bernardines brothers (bernardites) arrived from a convent of Vilna to the settlement called Buddha (in the ancient documents also Butslau) and built there a small wooden chapel.El icon of the Mother of God of Budslau is kept in place at least from 1613according to the chronicles of the convent itself, and was mentioned as miraculous relic for the first time in 1617.En 1598the icon was given to the governor of the province of Minsk, Jan Pats; it was later placed in the wooden church of Budslau, where from the beginning it was venerated and soon became famous for the favors attributed to its intercession. In 1635, the icon was transferred to Major altar, sign of its centrality in the liturgical life of the temple.

The first miracles also consist of written sources: first registered miracle data de 1617, when a five-year-old, Yazafat Tyshkevich (later to become a Carmelite), regained his sight. Over the centuries, the place was consolidated as center of faith, culture and ecumenism for Catholics in the region, in a largely orthodox context, and has become recognized as one of the main religious symbols of Belarus.

The image and the sanctuary

The iconography is part of the tradition of Eastern Marian icons, presenting the Mother of God with the Child Jesus and being the object of special veneration as the bearer of favors and mercy.

The icon is venerated in the Budslau church, recognized as National sanctuary of the Catholic Church in Belarus. The present temple, of historical style and large size, is considered historical monument of national importanceand both the church and the annexed parish house are protected as goods of architectural value. Various ecclesial and outreach sources identify it as the main Marian sanctuary of the countrywhere the liturgical and pastoral life is developed, linked to the advocation, in the context of Latin rite. Some sources of Marian outreach mention it as a papally recognized sanctuary and center of intense pilgrimage and prayer.
