The Catholic presence in the Phnom Penh region was consolidated through the Apostolic Vicariate of Phnom Penh, canonically built in the 20th century (divided from the apostolic jurisdiction that covered all of Cambodia), with a strong missionary imprint of the Latin European Church and later of local communities. The cathedral of Phnom Penh, dedicated to the Virgin Mary (in Latin rite), was the main temple of the Catholic community of the capital until the arrival to power of the Jemeres Rojos (Khmer Rouge) en 1975.
During the Pol Pot regime (1975-1979), the Church in Cambodia was virtually annihilated: the places of worship were closed or destroyed, the clergy and many laity were deported, imprisoned or executed, and all religious expression was proscribed. The old cathedral of Phnom Penh was completely crushed In those years, as part of the policy of systematic destruction of religious and cultural structures. After the fall of the regime, the Church had to restart from a small surviving community, composed of some hidden faithful, returned from exile and new converts, who took back the sacramental life and Marian devotion into scattered and very humble communities.
In recent decades, various ecclesial sources highlight the role of the Virgin Mary in the spiritual rebirth of the Cambodian Church, with particular emphasis on devotion to the "Our Lady of the Mekong", promoted in the Vicariate and pastoral linked to the figure of the Mother of God in the life of the communities along the Mekong River. This Marian sensitivity is also inserted in the painful memory of the destroyed cathedral and in the hope of a future of peace and reconciliation.
# # Tradition and spiritual memory
There are no specific ancient legends linked to the Virgin in Phnom Penh comparable to other Marian claims of miraculous apparition or finding. Rather, a spiritual memory in the Catholic community: the destroyed cathedral is remembered as a sign of the martyrdom of the people of God, and the Virgin as Mother of comfort and hope for the survivors and their descendants.
In this context, the reference to "Our Lady of Cambodia" is understood as a way of designating the Virgin Mary as she is venerated by the local Church, especially in the capital and its surroundings, in continuity with the ancient Marian dedication of the cathedral and in tune with the most recent devotion to Our Lady of the Mekong. It is therefore a local and spiritual characternot necessarily linked to a title canonically defined in public documents, but born from the experience of persecution, survival and rebirth of the Catholic community.
The image and the sanctuary
No consta una specific image, canonically recognized and documented under the exact title "Our Lady of Cambodia" linked to a single national Marian sanctuary in Phnom Penh. In contrast, the strong irradiation of Marian devotion in the Apostolic Vicariate of Phnom Penhwith special dissemination of the title of Our Lady of the Mekongwhich is the subject of pilgrimages and great popular veneration, also by non-Catholics.
The ancient cathedral of Phnom Penh, dedicated to the Virgin and destroyed by the Khmer-Red, no longer exists physically; therefore, its headline image and structure cannot be described with verifiable data from recent sources. There is no detailed description of the iconography of the main image (type, material, style) that was venerated there in the sources consulted. Today, the life of the Church in Phnom Penh is articulated in various parishes and pastoral centers, where the Virgin Mary is present in images of liturgical and devotional use (usually of Western iconography, typical of the Latin rite), but without a "national Marian sanctuary" specifically identified under the name "Our Lady of Cambodia."
In the country as a whole, the place where Marian devotion appears with greater emphasis and concrete references is the environment of the Virgin of the Mekong, an image located in a public and very visited context, in which Mary is represented in an accessible way to the local sensibility, and that has attracted thousands of pilgrims, most non-Catholic, generating a focus of discreet evangelization and pastoral service. This reality helps to understand how the memory of the ancient Marian cathedral of Phnom Penh is integrated into a broader Marian panorama, in which the Virgin is perceived as Mother near the Cambodian people.
Sponsorship and coronation
There is no evidence of a official decree to proclaim "Our Lady of Cambodia" as the principal patron of the Cambodian nation and the city of Phnom Penh, in the canonical terms in which national or diocesan patronings are defined in other countries. Marian devotion, however, permeates the life of Apostolic Vicariate of Phnom Penh, and various pastoral testimonies explicitly relate the mission of the local Church to the protection of the Virgin Mary, mentioning in particular Our Lady of the Mekong.
No consta una documented canonical coronation of a Marian image under the title "Our Lady of Cambodia" or other Marian advocation specific to the Cathedral of Phnom Penh, with decree of the Holy See or of the ordinary of the place publicly recognized in the sources consulted. The following should therefore be stated to date: does not contain a documented canonical coronation for this advocation.
Party and devotion
No consta una litigation fiesta propia entered in an official calendar (universal or particular) under the exact title "Our Lady of Cambodia" for the city of Phnom Penh. In pastoral practice, the local Church celebrates, as in the entire Latin Church, the main Marian festivals of the Roman calendar (Solemnity of St. Mary, Mother of God; Immaculate Conception; Asunción, etc.), which acquire a special tone of gratitude for the survival of the faith and for the rebirth of the community after the genocide.
For the Virgin of the Mekongwhich is part of the Marian devotional landscape of Cambodia, the sources point to an intense influx of pilgrims, mostly non-Catholic, who come to pray, make offerings and ask for favors, which generates a form of "continuous feast" around the image, although it is not structured as traditional Romeria in the European style. This reality reflects how the figure of the Virgin, associated with the Mekong River and the daily life of the people, becomes a bridge of encounter between the Church and local culture.
Marian devotion in Cambodia is characterized by:
– Un fuerte sense of comfort ante el recuerdo del genocidio y las heridas aún abiertas de la sociedad. – Una confianza sencilla en la protección de la Virgen en las dificultades materiales y familiares. – Un clima interreligioso en el que la imagen de María es respetada y venerada por muchos no cristianos, que se acercan a las imágenes marianas para rezar y dejar ofrendas.
In this context, the memory of the Marian cathedral destroyed in Phnom Penh is lived as a kind of "silent martyrdom," and devotion to Mary as a sign of hope for
