Main data
Origin and history
La advocación de Our Lady of Carthage is inserted in the continuity of the ancient North African Christianity, in the land of Saint Cipriano of Cartago and Saint Augustine of Hipona, where from the first centuries a deep Marian devotion was professed. Although the Catholic community in Tunisia is very small today, various testimonies remember that the Virgin is particularly venerated in Carthage as a sign of spiritual continuity with that great African Christianity of Antiquity.
As regards documented historypriests and religious communities present in Tunisia (including the Institute of the Encarnate Word and the Servants of the Lord and of the Virgin of Matará) refer expressly to the advocation of "Our Lady of Carthage" as a Marian devotion of these lands, whose party is held on May 24. An article by Fr. Silvio Moreno, IVE, dedicated to this advocation, states that the Virgin is to be venerated in Cartago "for centuries," although it does not offer precise dates or concrete ancient documents.
From the perspective of tradition / legend, some devotional texts around Our Lady of Cartago emphasize that Mary would have protected "as in other times" the Tunisian people and their Christians, evoking the memory of the ancient Christian splendor of the region and suggesting a constant Marian presence over the centuries. This formulation has a pious and testimonial character, but is not supported by identifiable historical documents, so it must be distinguished from verifiable history.
The image and the sanctuary
The available sources do not accurately describe a imagen oficial única of Our Lady of Carthage (type of sculpture or painting, material or specific iconographic details); no consta with safety a clearly differentiated own iconography from other Marian representations. In the testimonies consulted, we speak of the Virgin venerated under this advocation, without providing technical data on the work (author, date, style, etc.).
As for the place of worship, the devotional monograph and the chronicles of the religious in Tunisia point out that Marian devotion remains alive in Cartagowithin the framework of the local Catholic presence. The most clear reference is to the ecclesial life linked to the Cathedral and the Church in Cartagowhere Mary is honored as Our Lady of Carthage in continuity with ancient North African Christianity. There is no evidence in the documents consulted that there is a National sanctuary officially erected under this title, nor that the main temple dedicated to this advocation has the rank of minor basilica; the cathedral of the region is first and foremost linked to the episcopal seat and is not formally mentioned as a specific Marian sanctuary of "Our Lady of Carthage" in the revised sources. Therefore, on the specific temple and its architectural or artistic characteristics, no constan detailed data.
Sponsorship and coronation
At least in the field of mission and female consecrated life, Our Lady of Carthage appears as Patron of the Residence "Our Lady of Carthage" in Tunisia, attended by the Servants of the Lord and of the Virgin of Matará. In a chronicle, the religious point out that on May 24 they celebrate Our Lady of Cartago, "santa patrona" of the young women of the residence. This data indicates a concrete local patronage, linked to this work and, by extension, to the small Catholic community that meets there. It is not clear, however, that the advocation has been formally proclaimed. patron of the city of Cartago, the municipality, the diocese or the Tunisian nation by ecclesiastical decree; on this point, no consta a broader official recognition.
No mention of a canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Carthage, neither by decree of the Holy See nor by pontifical delegation. Therefore, with the available data, it should be stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Both the Spanish summary of the title and the chronicles of the Residence "Nuestra Señora de Cartago" explicitly agree on this date, which is presented as an own Marian holiday in Tunisia. Some devotional references in social networks and materials of Marian dissemination also include this advocation in the liturgical or pious memory of May 24.
In the Residence "Our Lady of Carthage," the young women celebrate their patron with a special celebration (Eucharist and festive events), which attests to a living but minority devotion, of a numerically small Catholic community. The available sources do not provide quantitative data on inflow of pilgrimsnor do they explicitly describe great pilgrimages organized to Carthage under this title; in the revised documentation no consta a tradition of mass pilgrimages comparable to other major Marian shrines. The devotion is manifested above all in the context of the daily life of the local Churchas a memory of the protection of the Virgin in the land of the great African Fathers.
Link to the Rosary
The specific sources about Our Lady of Carthage do not point to a particular or historical link with the prayer of the Rosary (promises, apparitions, own rosarian copradies, etc.); on this point, no consta a relationship differentiated from other Marian claims.

The Rosary allows to contemplate the mysteries of Christ's life with the eyes of Mary, and in a land marked by the memory of ancient African Christianity it becomes a concrete way to keep that tradition alive: it unites the present small community with the faith of the martyrs and doctors of the Church who confessed to Christ and honored his Mother.
