Marian devotion
Our Lady of Chapi
Patrona de Arequipa
In a desert area south of Arequipa, the Chapi shrine brings together each May one of Peru's largest Marian pilgrimages, marked by the penitential path to the Virgin.
Origin and history
The devotion to Our Lady of Chapi dates back to a venerated Marian image in the area of Chapi, in the surroundings of Arequipa, since colonial times. The sanctuary is in a desert region with difficult access, which accentuates the penitential character of the pilgrimage.
The tradition includes many favors attributed to the Virgin, especially its protection from earthquakes, so common in the Andean region. With the centuries, Chapi was consolidated as one of Peru's most important Marian devotions, with a great pilgrimage every May 1.
